I have a ming blue (post facelift) 2002 S3 with under 40000miles. Everything on it is standard (bit of a crime really I know) and since finding this site have spent many hours searching and browsing thru the threads and gotta say probably one of the best out there. So I figured if anyone can help me it's gonna be one of you guys.

I've been thru the usual array of probs with my S3 which I have now learnt are quite common such as the diverter valve losing performance, the coil packs packing up (no pun intended), the MAF deciding to call it a day, etc. All of these I have replaced myself with original Audi parts.

My problem now is a crunching gearbox when shifting from first to second at high rpm. Most likely than not a synchro prob.:uhm: My question to you guys: is there a quick fix to this? (i.e. using different grade oil in the gearbox - I see that a lot of guys recommend the Motul 300 gearbox oil - will this solve/improve the problem or will I have to bite the bullet and have synchros replaced? Also can anyone recommend a good/reputable Audi specialist in the South East that is reasonably priced? I've had enough of getting raped by Audi dealerships:keule:
Thanks.

my S3 has done 55000 and the gear box is a bit clunky but i thought it was the norm on this car ?

If it grinds as you shift from first to second at high rpm or even downshifting from high rpms (even if you toe-heel) then chances are it's the syncros that are screwed (although I'm not 100% certain about it).

I can't remember having this problem earlier on with my S3 it's only been in the last couple of months.

From reading some previous posts about our gearboxes it would seem that the S3 has a weak gearbox prone to problems like this and most of us just live with it but fast gear changes (especially 1st/2nd in my case) are frigin annoying.

If in fact it is the synchros Audi dealers are quoting me over £1000 to repair but I know that there are a number of trustworthy independent Audi specialists that are more reasonable on price and I'm hoping that someone here will be able to guide me towards one of them (in the South East).

I took my Audi S3 to this place:- Audi Volkswagen Specialists, Brook Way, Leatherhead, KT22 7NA
01372 383038

I had the cam belt and minor service carried out (genuine parts) and it came to £530 instead of the stealerships quote of £1000.... The guy has got many years of experience working on Audis and before setting up by himself he'd previously run service departments at Porsche, VW and Audi......

Thanks for that.
Have already spoken to him - sounds like a nice guy on the phone. Looks like in worst case can cost up to around £800!!! Or as little as £500/600 if no extra parts need replacing once opened. Only problem now is coming up with the readies and making my way down there and back coz they are 66miles form me.
