Is there anyway that turbo lag could be reduce on the S3? I understand an electronic boost controller could be used to set when the turbo kicks in, but is there any other ways bar a boost controller?

As I understand it (and I am not a mechanic), de-restricting the airflow in the turbo system (eg changing the exhaust and cat) will help.
My personal experience seems to fit with this as I have a switchable chip in my car, as well as free-flow exhaust and cat. Even when in stock mode the car is much more easy reving than it used to be.

I don't believe so.
Mine has no less lag now than on the standard stuff...the fact that the S3 runs a larger compressor wheel in a larger housing than a K03 turbo in an A3 / Golf will always mean that there is slightly more lag.
Exhaust, cats, modified airbox, modified turbo pipework, air filter etc all add to the engines response whilst not on boost...but won't reduce the lag. Not on mine anyway.
But to be honest, anyone that complaines about the lag on an S3 should go back in time and drive an RS turbo or early big turbo Escort Cossie...then it'll remind you of just how little lag the S3 really has!

I just took the lower fog lights out of my S3 as they resist the air flow to the inter coolers esp the drivers side one...........have a look at your own car.
I have noticed the car when it has properly warmed up, feels more responsive now due to the better cooling.
