Hi All,

After three months of owning an S3, and four years of owning an A3 1.8T prior to that, I could resist the temptation of remap no longer (never did it to the A3). With all the talk of excellent gains, transformed driving experiences and OEM like reliability the £4-500 started to sound like a bit of a bargain.

After much deliberation about custom vs. generic maps and which tuner to choose I decided on a custom job at Jabbasport. Peterborough is a fair distance from manchester but the wealth of experience available from Jabba together with the number of positive experiences I've heard about their service made it seem like the right choice. The long A roads on the journey home had nothing to do with the decision, honest ;)

Anyway, to the important bit! After the 4 hours of magic by Mr Trulock (Jabba's Technical Director) the keys were handed to me for test drive. I turn the key and drive the car out of the car park noticing just how normal everything felt, for some reason I was expecting there to be a tell tail sign of changes, not sure why really but anyway....I pull on to the dual carriageway and give the throttle a gentle poke to 3k rpm and it feels different, there's a much more pronounced turbo at the later end of the 2k rpm. I then slowed as some traffic was turning off which left me with a clear straight. Feeling the excitment growing I hit throttle, not floored, just quickly but progressively. What a difference!!! Effortless pace and a good punch in the back all the way through to 6k. It is still smooth, but its certainly clearly recognisable that there's a decent turbo under there now. The in-gear pace from 70 to 120 is a world away from what it was, gob smacking performance from a little 1.8 4 pot.

For those interested, the graph is here: http://www.david.barber.zen.co.uk/S3/Power_Report.pdf

According to Mike, the dip at about 5250rpm was due to the car losing stability on the rolling road. I couldn't confirm that as I didn't physically see it, but I certainly can't feel any dip in power when in the car. It just feels strong but smooth all the way. I don't have a print out of the before figures but I'm told it ran 228bhp, but again I have no evidence.

There'll be those that comment on the power figures being inaccurate etc etc, and feel free to do so if you want as I don't really mind. All I know is that the car now feels far more capable and agile (which is impressive considering mine weighs in at 1432kg).

All in all, I was very satisfied with Jabba, they really seem to know what they're taking about and the car feels great. If you're thinking about getting it mapped, JUST DO IT!. I'd read other peoples posts and wondered if it was worth it, and now I know that it is :)

Glad to hear you're happy, I'm thinking about a Jabba Custom remap too. :)

Did they ask what you wanted from the map etc. or did you just let them get on with it?

Any noticeable difference in economy?

Cheers,

ICE

Congratulations :) I can't wait to take mine to get a custom remap but a little question, why not goto somewhere like AmD or MTM who specialise in VAG tuning...

Congratulations too!

Been thinking the re-map for the last 6 months and hearing nothing but good things! :yahoo:

They asked me what fuel I wanted it mapping for to which I answered V-Power as I have a shell garage local to me. They also asked how I wanted the power delivery, to which I answered 'more of the same', smooth to the red line rather than peaky.

Its a little early to comment on economy but so far it looks slightly better than standard.

AmD are even further away from me and i've heard some less than positive things about them since they were taken over. I never really considered MTM to be honest as i'm not sure about custom outlets near me.

And BTW, Jabba do specialise in VAG tuning and have been doing so for the last 10 years. They also specialise in forced induction. :)

The fuel economy question really depends on how you drive, I have found it to be more economical with the remap with normal driving, but drive it hard, and you will know it's hit you in the wallet, the 40 odd BHP has to come from somewhere lol :racer:

Great stuff!

Thanks for your reply. Enjoy it :)

I've got The Revo map and it's good. In hindsight though I'd choose to have it remapped somewhere with a rolling road so I could see before and after graphs, I just think it would give you more reassurance that all is well. (Rather than someone just driving your car up and down a road and saying "yup... that's faster than it was before...".)

Ah well thanks Blunteh! My other option would MRC, do they offer rolling road?

Right i am confused  (easily done)

Could somebody tell me the figures in bhp for wheels, transmission loss and engine? Also the torque figure in lbs/ft?

Cheers

Ahh. Ok my bad heh. They seem kinda far as i'm based in South London. Theres an outlet called QS Tuning that are official MTM tuners (http://www.qstuning.com/index.jsp) and Miltek too so might go there instead.
Gonna e-mail them to see what they say.
If there too pricey i'll just drive up to Jabba then, heard nothing but good things from them heh.

One more question, what happens if when they do a diagnostic of my car before they do anything to the car and it comes up with a mechanical problem, are we able to fix it there and then or do I have to go away and come back another time?

jabbasport look like they know what there doing. iv got a standard 1.8t sport would it be worth getting it remapped with just an induction kit.

you would see a difference remaping the 1.8T, but the induction kit proabably does nothing

experts will proabably advise whats best

You will get a bit more induction noise and thats about it.

Congrats on the jabba remap!! Had mine 9months and still all smiles! Even grins when you can drive it well and show some bigger cars the way!

BTW what mods have you done?

I think it depends on the scale of the problem they find, if its a big job then you might need a second visit.

On my car or yours?

Yours mate, seem to be some difference from mine if i have worked it out correctly?

I found a site that convert the units from Kw to bhp :detective2:

The thing that confuses me is the drag output differences, this is not a "i have more power than you" post

Yours has a 43bhp loss compared to my 73bhp, why is there so much off a difference

My map

Mike

Absolutely no idea! It could just be the rolling road variations. I'm sure someone far more knowldegable will know.

73bhp loss sounds much more believable loss for a haldex car.

were they both 4wd dynos? and both run with the prop and fuse?

I think jabba now remove the rear half shafts for their power runs, to take the haldex out of the equation. BUt it still turns up to the rear diff, just no drive, hence the power loss of 43hp is proabbaly more than you may expect for a fwd, but less than a 4wd.

There is an article on RRs in this months Audi Driver - including a map of who has got what where (although there are a few people missing from the map).

Anyway, it mentions that you can 'run your S3 on a 2WD RR by disabling the Haldex controller'. I'd heard of this in the past but thought the general concensus was that it wasn't a good idea to disable it by removing the fuse?

Pulling the fuse is an option but yes, general concensus is it is not a good idea overall.

I confimred this with Jabba at the time, it was run in 4wd, hence their problems getting it to sit on the rollers. Not sure why the power loss reading is different, but TBH who really cares? As long as you get pleasure from your cars performance thats all that matters :)

Edit, TBH i care as you seem to have gained roughly 30bhp and 50lb-ft more than i got out of a re-map. Seems like i went to the wrong tuning company!!!
