tapping noise normal ?

Hi

maybe im starting to become to obsesive with this car of mine, but when running idle, there is a tapping sound which comes from the drivers side not too fasr back from the front headlight...

When I start the car up it starts going about 10-15 seconds after the ignition is turned on...

Perhaps its normal for the engine as I have not stood outside when the engine is on before....

I have an A3 1.8T Quattro...

I had this sound on my TT with the 1.8T lump in it.

Is the sound coming from a black canister in the engine bay?

If so, it's perfectly normal and is something to do with the emission control system.

I thought it was tappets, but found out after searching on here and UKMKIV's and finding the canister, that it wasn't.

My brothers Leon Cupra R makes the same sound as well. It drives him mad, and I'm forever having to tell him not to worry!!

If it's a ticking that doesn't vary with engine speed, then I think what you are hearign is the noise made by the charcoal cannister (black box next to washer bottle) with an electrical connection and hose connection coming off it.

This is a normal noise for it to make so no worries there!
