Wow its slippy today, was setting off very slowly after pulling in at a turn-around. Set off 1st....2nd.......3rd......then pushed hard for a quick squirt of power and ESP Judder Judder!!!! Wow i was going towards the kerb with the camber of the road. Wohooooo, I made it sound worse, but i was just getting to the fact that Esp does save your life in many situations, not that you can do much on Ice anyway.

It wasn't a close encounter, just to the fact i thought my clutch was slipping, however I sooner realised the front wheels were slipping..:)

yeah...is gettin slippy.

i had a one handed (was scratching my head with the other!), half a lock of correction, fun moment earlier...and that was at about lunch time!!!

wow.....mine wasn't that bad however i am young and inexperienced in ice. I am going on a skid pan soon, maybe this week-end if my shoulder gets better. Need to get to grips with quick correction on opposite lock without getting inside out. I know on Autocraft you not allowed to crossover your hands, you have to shuffle. Thats the hard part, i hate shuffling.

handbrake trick doesn't always work! my last car (mkII punto) understeered a lot normally, but was turning into a very tight downhill left hander on snow at 10mph (i s**t you not!) and it understeered goin stright on towards a house, so pulled up handbrake to turn it in, did a bit but then just started sliding completely parallel (if you know what i mean!) ended up gettin stopped by the front wheel hitting the end of the high kerb side on...destroyed wheel. but if it hadn't managed to catch the end of the kerb i would've stopped in their living room. it was a little crazy, but wouldn't have happened in most cars (it was that bad in snow...the abs would overreact and you simply couldn't stop, apart from with gentle use of handbrake).

thing about crashing on ice or snow is that the accident tends to take a long time to happen!

best thing to catch a rear end slide with FWD is to jump on the throttle (puts weight onto the rear, thus giving the tyres more grip)

I've had some nasty experiences in snow and ice. Way back I had an escort, went into a corner too fast, hit some black ice and started to understeer. Applied lots of lock, and when the tires caught traction it spun me into the oncoming lane. I missed a minibus by about half a second (I spun behind it).

I've also had oversteer in bad weather too. I used to have a Nissan 200SX (nice car, if a little basic in mechanical terms). Went into a (different) icy corner a bit quick (though not fast by any means) and the rear started coming out. Luckily I was able to apply a bit of opposite lock and just gently kiss the kerb rather than spinning. Car was fine.

To emphasis that if it's icy, there's nothing you can do I once had low speed incident. Had a different escort and was turning into a side junction. It was obviously snowy so I slowed to 5mph for the turn. It just kept going forward though, straight towards another car. I just sat on the brakes and prayed. I stopped in time.

Finally, probably the most scary was an incident that another motorist caused. There is a big dip near where I live, with a long downward slop followed by an equally big up slope. I was following a car that was obviously going a bit too quick, so I started to back off. The other motorist started to brake, perhaps they wanted to turn into the garage at the bottom of the dip, but their car started to slide. I could see what was going to happen, so I was gently braking. The car in front went into a spin. I was stil gently braking because I didn't want to spin too, and my rear end was starting to slip. The other car ended up diagonally across the road, pointing back the way they had come. I ended up parallel to them but still pointing in the right direction. We stopped about a yard appart.

Yes, we get a lot of ice near where I live. Hence my going for 4WD to have a chance. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

Skid pan trip sounds like a good plan. I did one in my last car and it was great fun. The trick is finding somewhere where you can do it in your own car as it means a whole lot more to you when you see how it feels. A lot of these place use their own cars and/or cars on jack-up castors rather than a real skid pan.

We did it in Manchester where stagecoach teach their bus drivers how to handle a bus. /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif

I think also they pulled the ABS fuses on cars with ABS, I can't remember as I didn't at the time have ABS.

I've been thinking about getting myself onto a skid pan, after my crunch into a kerb and off-roading expidition recently, to learn more about the car in wet/slippery situations.

I've had a quick look on the web, but can't find much info. What I have seen dosen't seem like you can use your own car /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

If we can find one in the midlands I'd be up for that /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

Well you can because I did in my last car. Unless rules have changed since. I did it with a friend who was a member of the IAM and I think it was arranged through them. The one slight problem was having the clean the cars afterwards, they were coated in oil to the level of the windows after all the spinning and slidding. Unfortuantely I've moved since and I've not been able to find anything down here to do it and I'd like to do it again as a A3 TS is a bit different to my old Clio 1.9D /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh_roll.gif

Black ice and snow were one of the reasons I bought an A3 this time round. I liked rear wheel drive but in the Scottish winters I took my life in my hands with my old BMW that had no trick or toys, just a very light back end!! Even trying to use the gears to slow down was like putting the handbrake on! Opposite lock and applying power never really worked either it just pushed the nose out is the back even gripped.

Noodle quite often the police run skid pan lessons, no cost, a very short session, but still worth doing. I went on one about 4-5 years ago, and it showed the value of ABS and what to do in a skid. Give your local Police info desk a call and see if there is anything on offer.

I went on a skid pan session at Castle Coombe a couple of years ago. I had it bought for me as a leaving present and I thoroughly (Is that how you spell it?) enjoyed it. I didn't think I would but I learn't a lot. I was so impressed that I bought it for my father in law for christmas. I think if you phone Castle coombe direct it is about £60 if I remember right. Well worth it!

Cheers

You can provoke oversteer in a FWD by going into a corner to fast lifting off and then catching the back with opp lock and a bit of power. This normally only works if the front has grip though.

Indeed you can /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/devil.gif Dependent on the corner this can be very effective and fun, so if you're really giving it some you can experience understeer and oversteer in the space of a couple of secs.....but these days I just tend to go round the corner.....which is the fastest method /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/lol.gif

Quattro + Ice = My Big Smile.

ps.. I dont have ESP on my S3. Would'nt want it either...

(that should put the cat amongst pigeons)

there's not much the esp can do about it once you lose grip on ice - as I found out yesterday morning! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/laugh.gif
