    what clutch

    i have a s3 and its needing a new clutch but a dont have a clue whitch to get, the most i am ever goin to do to the car is a re-map does anyone have any ideas of what to go for and prices? would another standerd clutch be ok with a re-map? thanks fo help

    If you have to replace it anyway then get an uprated one. They are only £100-£200 more than standard. Will give you peace of mind because some standard clutches can't take a remap.

    Mine cost about £900 fitted but others have got them for a lot less.

    Looks like mine might be on the way out as well, so I'd be interested in what people recommend.

    Monkeytrousers - did you get your MTM one fitted by QST?

    The standard factory clutch is more than upto the job of holding remapped S3 power, unless you have somehow managed to muster over 300lb torque from the turbo. Of course if you launch the car all the time, or plan a trackday/ 1/4mile sprints on a regular basis, then an uprated clutch is recommended!
    I just went for a direct replacement from Valeo to keep the clutch pedal light, and it's adequate for my driving style.

    Just my opinion of course.

    I`m about to change mine in next few weeks.. Going for a sachs item.. I can get them at good prices

    Yep - QST. It was 7 hours labour which made up the bulk of the cost. The clutch itself was about 200. I've been very pleased with it though, you can change gear a bit quicker but it has a very tight bite point. Soon get used to it though.

    For sure, most people's standard clutch can take it. But a lot can't - probably depends on driving style and previous wear and tear. A remap's increased torque is going to put more pressure on the clutch which can tip them over the edge.

    As the majority of the cost is labour, and you need a new clutch anway, and you're thinking of remapping, then it would seem silly not to get an uprated clutch.

    little update

    gave star performanc a call and he will do a sachs clutch whitch includes everything apart from labour for 450+vat ,and also gave qst a call and they were 250 just for the center plate, pat how much can you get 1 for? cheers

    also

    got a quote from glasgow audi for a standerd clutch and they were 188+vat and euro car parts were 108+vat for a sachs clutch.

    I have recently had a Sachs clutch fitted to mine, got it from Euro Car parts. No bother so far, my car is standard though so just a bog standard clutch.

    what are the sachs clutches like to use? are they really heavey or just like a standard one, having one fitted to mine?

    The sachs items are very good clutchs.. They are fitted to many types of OE vehicles ie cars, trucks vans etc etc... I`m ordering one from sachs next week through my work.. If anyone else wants one pls PM me...

    It looks like Sachs do two types of clutch - a standard item which is OEM tolerance, and a motorsport item, which I'd guess is heavier duty.

    I'd guess (but you'd need to confirm with Jim at Star) that his is the motorsport clutch and ECP is the standard one.

    another update

    sach clutch at star is 450+vat
    mtm clutch is 333+ vat
    euro car parts 108+ vat
    glasgow audi 188+ vat

    does anyone know if the mtm clutch is heavy and what the bit is like? if am goin to get an uprated clutch a think a will be gettin the mtm clutch. am just thinking of if i get a normal clutch it might start slipping if i get it mappd, but seens alot of people say the standerd clutch will hold a remap no bother, the most i am ever goin to do to my car is a map. do you guys think the sachs item will hold up as good as a standerd audi clutch? thanks again.

    german swedish and french said they will do a clutch + flywheel for 320+vat. just need to take the clutch and stuff apart and see if it needs it done.

    I've got an MTM clutch and the best way i can describe it is 'unforgiving'. It is not however 'heavy' atall. It just bites very quickly so it needs a bit of getting used to when driving normally, and a bit of extra delicacy otherwise whiplash all round. Worst thing is first thing in the morning when the legs are still a bit tired - I can be seen to 'launch' out of my drive at 7:00am thanks to the choke giving some extra revs!
    It does however give excellent launch when required, and is nowhere near as bad as the AP racing clutch in my friends Escort Cos.
    At the end of the day it's a high performance clutch so it's not particulary designed for comfort, just expect to stall a few hill starts.

    sound like mtm is the way for then Al with ur F1 type launches
