I have now noticed my clutch has started slipping very slightly on my 51 plate S3.. I work in the parts trade and can get a clutch from the likes of sachs etc etc for next to nothing.. My question is how big a job is it to do and what sort of money will it cost in labour??

Long job mate, i did my mates the other weekend it took us about ten hours to do on axle stands. The labour rate for the job is massive the cheapest my mate got quoted was £550 labour with him providing the clutch.

£550?!, I got mine done for £225 at a gearbox specialist, and I supplied the clutch and a new(used) gearbox aswell, and he did it in an afternoon!

I was kind of expecting a labour charge of about the 200-250 mark.. I can get a clutch for less than a 100 quid.. Joys of working in the trade

There's cheap clutches and there's CHEAP clutches!, even though you are getting them at trade price, don't skimp too much and go for the cheapest one, your S3 deserves better lol. :racer:

It isn`t a CHEAP clutch trust me.. Just helps when you know the right people..

Im a carpet fitter and I managed to source a LUX clutch kit for 83 pounds delivered. It cant be that much of a perk working in parts if can only get one just under 100 pounds lol
:p

But it isn`t a LUX item.. Even through that is a very good price..

Hi guys,
I noticed my clutch slipping a couple of weeks ago and called my local dealer who told me the job would cost about £1800 with the clutch c£500 plus 10 hours labour.... I was pretty shocked as not being particularly technical I figured it was a pretty simple job. Not sure what to do really as I can't afford that. How quickly does it need to be done, can I nurse it for a couple of months? Also, does anyone know anywhere cheaper in south west london? Whats a realistic price? My car is a 2002 S3 with an MTM 270 BHP upgrade, it's done about 50K.

Thanks

Chris

Depends on if you want an uprated clutch really, but as the earlier posts suggest, labour should be be around £250 cash if you supply the clutch at a gearbox specialists, and should not take more than a day.

Best quote so far is £900 inc VAT and fitting for an uprated MTM clutch from QS tuning.

Mine cost £350 labour for clutch and flywheel :(

In the Sachs catalogue, it lists 4.5 hours labour time to replace an S3 clutch. So that's a lot of cups of tea to account for the remaining 5.5 hours!

I've just had mine diagnosed as needing a new flywheel and clutch assembly. Is it worth moving to a single mass rather than dual? I need to get this done next week as I use mine daily. What would you guys recommend? OEM such as LUK or go for an uprated clutch and flywheel?

I would stick with a an OE type ie sachs etc etc.. Mines booked in on tuesday to have mine replaced

Advice please guys, whats the best place for replacing the clutch near Medway,Kent.I'm willing to travel 50+miles or so for a good mechanic.
Any suggestions....Thanks in advance.

I would try a dealer, maybe a Seat dealer as I think the clutch on the Leon Cupra R is the same. Ask for some discount, 10% is always available if you ask nice! I got one for my Golf GTI 18T for only £95, the full VAG kit. Again, I am sure the sachs one is excellent, but at least with VAG stuff, if it does break, you have a 2 year warranty on genuine parts.....? Worth considering IMO.
BTW, I still get all my Audi and VAG parts from my local and fairly friendly VW garage. I have found them cheaper than the Audi Seat and Skoda garages for the same Audi Skoda and Seat parts...? Weird?

I tried my local dealer and the RRP of the flywheel was over £500 then new flywheel from GSF which is LUK is £239 so a lot cheaper. I've learnt my lesson and taken out insurance with the breakdown for an extra £40/year its worth it as it covers most things apart from wear and tear. But thanks for the advice.

dealer book time to change an s3/tt clutch is 9.2 hours, ouch!!!

the funny thing is it took me only 3 and a half hours to change mine myself, although i have done lots of them before! the best you can do is find an independant that is reliable and get them to do it using genuine parts, at least then if it fails you get dealer labour warranty!
ALSO NEVER FORGET IT IS ALWAYS WORTH REPLACING THE SLAVE CYLINDER AT THE SAME TIME! they normally fail causing the pedal to stick to the floor, and take only about another 10 mins to change and bleed.

Mines in for a clutch today.. just waiting to go collect it..

Hmm, as per my earlier post, there are a lot of cups of tea to be drunk at £90 an hour...

dealers suck! They'd need it for over a day then....?
