S3 Question

What is the Mechanical difference between the 210bhp and the 225bhp versions of the S3?

reason im asking is that I've just had an insurance quote for a 1999 S3, not sure whether its the 225bhp version (are the 225 all 2002 onwards?)

you could get either from sept 01 onwards, i think all 02 onwards were 225bhp. the 99 will be 210. not sure on mechanical differences.

ok cheers mate, i just looked at the engine code list and it seems that post 2001 are all 210 as you say, but ill have to deal with that, i cant get insured on a 225 untill im 21 ill have to settle for a 2000 version i guess

i couldnt believe the difference it made. mine was registered 8/01/02 (225bhp) and the difference on insurance was £200!! compared to a 2001

I thought there was some internal differences in the engines, infact i seem to remember that the earlier 210bhp cars have better/stronger internals than the later cars.

Early 210bhp cars have 20mm gudgeon pin.

Later 210bhp and 225bhp engine has 19mm gudgeon pin.

Id go for the 210 if it was me not enough difference to warrant going for the 225,

Dont forget that very early cars didnt have VVT whereas facelift 210's had mechanical VVT and later ones electronic (i think).

Oh dear here we go again, more crap being posted about the differences... They do essentially remap to the same figures.

The 210 APY should be the strongest engine as it's got the 20mm pins as steve's said, there is no VVT from what Ryan on here has said and I'm pretty sure he's right from what I can see on Elsawin and ETKA after having a look. APY only has one lambda sensor from memory where as all others have both pre and post cat.

The 210 AMK and 225 BAM have VVT but is again only for emissions, it's not a fundamental change to the engine, I'm 99% sure the injectors are the same on all the S3s.

If I was buying an S3 it'd be on condition and more importantly how it drives than which one it is, but hey I'm biased as I've got the "crap" one.
