    ECU remap with uprated clutch?

    At some point in the future (once I've finished with a few other mods) I will be getting my 1.9 TDi (130bhp) remapped. I hear a lot of talk about remaps on these engines killing the standard clutches though.
    Some places that do remaps claim that they can get even more torque out of the engine if you have an uprated clutch. Is this true? If so then how much more torque are we talking here? I've decided that either way, I'd want an uprated clutch before I get the remap done. Would I need a full clutch kit (including flywheel) or what? How much would I be looking at spending on a better clutch? Any recommendations / advice is much appreciated!

    Sachs clutches seem to be quite popular - from memory the TDI they have at Jabba has one installed.

    might be worth a phone call?

    the standard clutch should be able to cope with most "normal" remaps i.e - 150 - 180bhp but it will depend on your driving style and if your tempted by the old traffic light grand prix.

    hi there i have remap and standard clutch is cool with angels remap and there very good

    plus all the posts you made on your "speed thread" where you said how miffed you were with the clutch slipping and that you may have to take the map off.......?

    You mentioned in the other thread how pxxed off you were about it.... and that you were considering taking the remap off because of it...? Was it that bad, or was it just a worry to you for the future..?

    Christ man, you werre quoted 700 odd for a new clutch, (seemsa lot btw! I would reckon on 300 and keep the dualmass, its not as bad as they all say and on a diesel it certainly helps make the motor run a bit smoother, all that weight!)

    Your post saying its "cool" is not 100% helpful, its not the full facts of your experience, is it...? I mean, the guy says he's heard about clutch trouble after remaps.....yes, from YOU a couple of weeks ago....!!

    Anyway, if you had responded saying you had some clutch slip after a few days but that its holding up ok now.....that would have been helpful..!

    I am glad your clutch seems better now then. You never posted anything I saw to say it was cured, that's alll. And I thought you were given the thread poster some deliberate missinfo as he was the one who lniked to James Bristols car on the other thrrad, that's all! My bad if I was wrong.

    On the clutch point, although its a potential weak point on the remapped diesels, (ny all accounts) I have read many many times that some clutch slip can be evident initially once remapped, but that after it slips a bit, the friction plate, "cleans up" and a new suface forms that will bite far better. Then it will go off and glaze up a bit after a few months, so owners can try to make it slip a bit, so it smells a bit, then let it cool and it bites again...! Just what I have read, dont blame me Mark and you other diesel boys if it jsut makes the slip worse!!

    But souonds like this may have some foundation, if yours has started to behave itself again.

    Andy if you want the max out of your re map your going to need a custom map which would be done LIVE on the road of RR

    In my Ibiza 130 I had the Sachs uprated clutch which was £750 all in fitted rated to 350 Lbs/ft.

    As long as you dont drive around in 5th 6th gear and start flooring it the standard clutch should be ok(for a while anyway)

    A remap killed my clutch too. But many people have no problems with the standard clutch. You just need to be prepared that it might happen.

    I have done 85k after a remap with a standard clutch.. depends how you drive...

    Thats probably the kiss of death for it now then..
    Coming back to Audi with an A3 Tdi Sportback Quattro... but the 220bhp T5 was epic....

    On the upside, if it does let go it paves the way for FMIC, Turbo upgrade, Sachs clutch, interview with bank manager..
    Coming back to Audi with an A3 Tdi Sportback Quattro... but the 220bhp T5 was epic....

    Thanks for the feedback everyone. Doesn't sound like the clutch will make a difference to the initial remap then. Still think I should get a sachs performance clutch to be on the safe side though (even if it is going to cost me 750).

    S3Andy - Not sure whether I'll go for a custom remap or not mate, I'm wondering if the slight gain in bhp is worth an extra 100? Is there much of a difference in performance between a standard remap and a custom remap?

    Its a tough call on diesels to be fair, the map tweaking is less "sophisticated" for want of a better word on dielsels, so I understand your trepidation.

    MAybe speak with the custom tuners that do generic stuff also and ask them generally what to expect if you go the whole hog..? To be fair to them there is no real skin off their noses as if anything the generic stuff that takes half an hour to put on, is possibly more profitable to them than half a day on the rollers.....?
    I'd agree, see how you go on wiht the clutch, budget for a new one eventually, and cross your fingers you can use the cash for something else!

    Why not have a chat with jabba mate, they do the uprated clutches and custom remaps and they have in my experience always offered good advice not just the advice that gets them the most money as some tuners seem to.
    Jabba have started doing quite alot of work on diesels, they have a fabia diesel that is heavily modded if you pop in and see them they may even take you out in it and demonstrate just what they can achieve.

    S3Steve, good tip there if you are confident with the person giving the advice. Usually the independent specialists... You will also get a feel for them generally too.

    Brian at Star Performance has or had a Fabia 130 pd, putting out 220 bhp... he mentioned that the standard clutch would slip until it was warm. It is a lighter car and non 4wd though.
    Coming back to Audi with an A3 Tdi Sportback Quattro... but the 220bhp T5 was epic....

    All I would say is try and get any mods done first if your going for a custom map

    Air filter,FMIC,Turbo and so on then it's worth getting a custom map done IMO

    That's good

    I know guys with 170bhp that are getting clutch slip!

    With just a remap + exhaust on my Ibiza my clutch was not liking it

    At the end of the day I guess it's all down to how the car is mapped

    and how u drive it! Mine slipped 4 times when i first had it mapped, dont do it anymore...or maybe im just a little bit more progressive now hehe works fine tho
