Hi guys

I've recently bought an A3 1.9 TDi Quattro and wanted to get your views on a couple of things.

I test drove a Golf 150 TDi and the suspension felt 'boat' like, this is a lot more planted/stable in comparison so presume it has the sport suspension. Is this any lower than standard?

I am going to buy some alloys soon and need your help :icon_thumright:

I don't particularly want to lower the car as the ride is pretty good and don't want to mod it too much, bar a remap and the alloys.

I think the new RS4 alloys would look really good but can't find any pictures on an A3, I have however found this fine example with BBS http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/vbpgimage.php?do=full&p=119&d=1150234420

I've read the PCD is different so I'd need to get reps with a PCD of 5x100 (Is this correct?)

Do you think 18's would make it look like it's on stilts? if not, what tyre size can I go up to so that it fills the arch, yet still being within the correct rolling radius?

Or would I be better of going to 17's with a wall height of 45?

I know I am new to Audi ownership but if you could spare the time to answer this I'd be really grateful :salute:

The above car has replaced this:

So I suppose I am one of the many converts :superman:

Hi, 17 or 18 is down to personal preference really, but I stuck with 17's as I didn't want to harshen the ride any more than it was already. (TDI Sport quattro).

This is a pic of mine with RS4/RSTT style wheels.

For 17's, the tyre size should be 225/45/17 and for 18's it's 225/40/18, if you want to stay close to the original rolling radius.

18's should look ok on standard sport suspension.

5 x 100 PCD is the correct size too.

That size really suits your car  I also like the style a lot, but am thinking of going for the newer ones purely for the fact that I've not seen any A3's with them on (I'm sure there are some). Have you seen any pictures floating around?

Are the tyres 215/45? I had Toyo T1-S on the Impreza and couldn't fault them (wet or dry) are these a good choice for the A3?

First of all, welcome to the club!

this is a photoshop i did of my car as i want those new RS4's you mentioned, they really suit the A/S3 in my opinion.

As for the PCD yes you are right, and as for lowering i personally would as yes it would look like its on slits! good luck/!

Check out this site for tyre size info, you can compare rolling radius of various tyre/rim sizes.

Ah didn't realise you meant new RS4!

My Toyos are the T1-S's and 225/45's.

I'm also pretty impressed with them, but previously I had a set of Goodyear Excellence tyres which I'm not sure is a fair comparison!

From memory, they seem to compare pretty well to the Michelin Pilot Sport 2's I had on my TT, and they're quite a bit cheaper.

It was on a Subaru forum where I first heard people raving about Toyo's actually!

Tooks - no worries, you may have swayed me over to these :D they really suit the standard/sport suspension height. Good choice of car by the way:)

Sinny71 - Thanks mate, I'll look into that.

Booth_S3 - Thanks for the welcome. I really do like those, but would want to see what 17's look like on standard suspension. I think I agree 18's might not look right as there would be less rubber, but can't picture if 17's would look too aftermarket, if you know what I mean.

I spent a fortune on the Impreza and don't want to go down that road with this car i.e. suspension (even though I love the look).

Oh the choices!!

no worries mate! the ones i chopped where 19's not sure if you can get them in 17's TBH

I've seen 17's on fleabay before though I didn't look at fitments etc.

Here you go, a three door A3 TDi Q... also in denim blue. Good choice if you aske me... ahem.

The RS4 set are on standard sport suspension and I think that it looks ok, not on stilts,

The RS6 set are on a lowered car on Bilsteins...

Hope this helps.

Both sets of wheels from Rochford Tyres, 18's. Both are reps..

And yes, the Lexus lights have definitely gone...

What size tyres are they? I don't think that that looks too stilt like at all.

I would however like to see the New RS4 alloys on an A3 if anyone has a picture lying around somewhere  but that gives me a good idea of what 18's look like. How has the ride quality been affected by 18's?

I like both the 17's and 18's now :uhm:

They are 225/40/18...

And the new RS4's do look pretty good too.. Booth has done a good photoshop there.

As for the ride, on the standard "sport" suspension it was ok, bit firmer but not too bad.

Now, around town its fim/bumpy with Bilsteins. Out of town its supple and controlled.
Having said that I would like to thank Edinburgh Council for making it impossible to drive anywhere in the city due to roadworks. Tracked vehicles are the way to go on Edinburgh roads...

Top drawer, thanks! You have even given me Brembo's too. That's me sorted for my next set.. off with the RS6's, on with the new RS4's..

Now where is Rochfords number....

welcome to the forum mate, nice car

BTW - your TDI quattro will have sport suspension which would make it 20mm lower than the standard A3's

when your looking for a remap, you can do a search as theres lots of information on here about the various companies, AMD / Jabba / DPM etc etc.

you might want to check out the diesel forum as well as some owners have done write ups and theres also sponsor forums where you may be able to get a bit of a deal on a remap / alloys etc

Hope it helps

Mike

Cheers chaps and thanks for the PShop Booth

I think when the time comes it will be best for me to take a trip down to Rochford to have a look at the wheels in real life. I saw that they do a a 5% discount for audi-sport.

I think on the performance side of things I might try the www.TDi-tuning.co.uk box before I go for the longer term remap. I will do some research in the diesel forum first though.

Thanks again guys
