Has anybody looked a the work required to convert a 2 wheel drive into a 4 wheel? Is it possible without extensive body modification. Is it possible to use the same gearbox? millions of questions I am just looking for any thoughts or info that people may have had.

I dread to think how much it would cost m8, have you not considered a proper limited slip diff or a racing traction control system(standard Audi items don't count as they are virtually redundant)

I think selling the TSport and buying a TQ would probably be the cheapest and most trouble free way of doing it.
Seriously.

Well I was considering buying a wreck or stripping one for the required parts. So cost would not be the biggest issue.
I am working under the assumption that the body and mounting points on the s3 and a3 would be very simmilar. The biggest issue could be the underbody length of the 4 door A3 compaired to the S3 or TQ.

Is there a transmission tunnel in the 2-wheel drive A3? There is on the S3 and I assume also on the TQ. If not, there'll be nowhere for the prop shaft to run in. The boot on the S3 is a lot shallower than the FWD models to allow for the extra space the rear diff takes up.
This sounds like a non-starter to me.

Heh, unless you jack it up on big leaf springs like they used to do with the Escort Mk1, kind of a 4wd A3 dragster edition.

How about finding 2 wrecked S3's - one with frontal damage an one with rear - do the chop-shop job yourself
Seriously, there are so many small differences between the two cars, it'd be a nightmare to get right. I'd never trust it at high speeds / extreme handling ... which is lets face it, what your buying it for. Then you have to insure it .... what are you gona say ... it's a AS3? or a kitcar
I'd just chip the TSport ... you'd get better power-weight than a stock S3 anyway ... or have you done that already?

It is quite certainly cheaper and easier to buy a TQ, but here is one thing that you could consider...
It is very cheap and easy to get a 4wd to yourself...just have enough beer

Maya,
Slightly off topic, but when Scott from AMD came over to my house the other (to pre-check my EMC before re-chipping), he mentioned that they were in the midst of fitting a 225BHP TT engine and drive-train to a Mark 4 Golf!!
So it sounds like some people are prepared to fork out for such work.

Sorry about the delay in reply I kinda work odd hours. LSD seems to be the go for now and chipping is a must.
Insurance would not be a problem I would use shannons insurance kinda expensive but they will insure anything with 4 wheels.
I well it seems that I am treading on thin ice with this idea. I will have to chase grip another way. If a written off S3 slips in my ring of friends of wreckers I will let the board know of cheap spares.
Thanks for the comments.
I will file this under plan z

Maya, tell me if you find a decent LSD for the A3, I'd quite like one myself!
