Recently Aquired new 1.8t - unsure of oil requirements

Hi all,

I've recently got a 1998 1.8t sport - it has 95k on the clock and a mixture of Audi & Audi Specialist service history + one recent lube service at a 'local type' garage .

The oil is low and needs a top-up but i'm not sure what oil would have been used throughout it's life (could anyone advise) or when it was serviced just before i bought it from an independant trader. I'm not sure but i don't think it was on extended servicing.

Is there something best to use "if in doubt"?
perhaps 10w40 semi or 05w40 synthetic? I picked up some GTX Magnatec 10 40 last night but read some old forum posts and people seems to specially warn off using this (?) so i haven't used it yet.

I've got a polo and have always used quantum synta silver 10w40 in that,
but that car is from another generation.

any info much appreciated.

Hmm, I don't know if you can mix synthetic with mineral oils.

Anyway, I run my S3 on 5000 mile oil changes and use fully synthetic 5W/40 - used to use Halfords own brand (regularly on buy one get one free so 10 litres for approx £35) but managed to get hold of a 25 litre drum of Synta gold for £25, so that will keep me sorted for another couple of years.

Definitively you CAN'T mix them, i work in school building race cars and one thing i know is that, you should go to an Audi dealer and tell them to do a system clean up, here they do it with a machine to eliminate all the mineral oil, and then add synthetic oil to the system, if you mixed big failure is my premonition

best to wither ask the garge that did it what they put in or better still change it completely then you know.

Personally, I have always used the fully synth gold synta vw oil from GSF, (cheap) in my 1.8T golf, but had a change recently on the S3 and the independant recommended the silver semi synth version, as they reckon the fully synth is too runny!! Not had any probs with it in my golf, (125k now) and feel happier that the turbo has some nice fully synth to lube it as it cooks when i come to park up, but semi synth is used on some very high output tuned cars form this independant.

Not sure what I will do on the next change.........feel happeir wiht fully, but if semi is as good, its only a tenner a change if you buy it from GSF.
