The other week my window decided to wind down but then on the way up stopped and made a nice grinding noise. I managed to catch it and push it back up by hand. A quick search on hear showed the problem was likely to be a broken plastic clip. Armed with some printouts and glue I set about sorting it but on stripping the door panel off found the actual wire cable that runs around the frame has snapped.

Does anyone have any ideas if I can just change the cable or will I need a new motor as the cable feeds into there?

Not the answer to your question but may be of some help, the windows broken on my S3 about 2 months ago, luckly it was just the clips. I did look at getting a new regulator, the cheapest I found was Euro carparts @ £65+vat.

Your lucky its just that i got stung at walton audi. for a motor regulator and the cable came off of my other door eneded up at over £400!

Yep, sounds like you need a new regulator. Euro Car Parts or GSF will get you the parts far cheaper than Audi, but from memory, I think you will need to drill out the old one as it is riveted in place, and then rivet in the new one? I think the detailed printout in one of the other threads (which it sounds like you have) shows exactly what to do. Good luck

Well it all sounds like a real pain in the *** to do. I might try a breakers for a whole frame unit and swap the lot as the rivets dont look like regular pop ones lol.

Cheers for the advice!

The rivets definiely not are regular ones as i found out, the car stayed in the garage for 5 days becoz the mechanics decided to do the job then realised later they couldnt get the rivets so had to wait from audi to get them...couldnt get them from any other store!!

The rivets are standard pop rivets, but quite long. I've done the regulator swap (the printout you have is probably by me....) and it isn't too hard. Took me a couple of hours.
You need to check you have rivets long enough to pass through the regulator and the frame.

My next-door neighbour had a boxfull. Standard rivets, but unusually long. He restores Land Rovers, so had a good selection. The ones I used were longer than the originals, but fitted OK- you just have to use the rivet gun more.

I suspect 'couldn't get' means 'couldn't be ***** looking for'.

I got the VAG specialist to do mine, cost £85 all in. Just wasn't worth the hassle of doing it myself to save £20.
