    power loss around 3250rpm...

    I have started to notice that occasionally when the car is 5th gear say around 30mph, i floor the throttle to build up speed when the car reaches around 3250rpm, it will pull back and then surge forwards again.

    Any ideas what this could be?

    Could it be that recently, i have been using RON95 instead of RON97 that i would normally use?

    i noticed this couldnt get any v power, stuck the normal ****e in and that happened.

    Ah ha, so it could be down to fuel grade then?

    The car was remapped when i bought it, and maybee it was remapped using RON97 or RON98 rather than RON95.

    MAF MAF MAF

    I get this at 3k, and I'm almost certain it's the MAF.

    If it were down to fuel, you'd notice it pretty much all the time. If it's a custom map, and maybe if it's generic, the fuel ignites under compression rather than the spark of the plug. you should notice some pinking, and it should happen under almost any load, maybe not when idling. Ask RichA3Turbo how his car runs on 95!!

    I've been using Optimax/V-Power since March btw.

    It doesn't bother me that much at the moment, as I can't/ don't want to use all the power at this time of year. Drove home tonight with 30m of visibility!!

    Is there anyway i can test the MAF to see if it actually malfunctioning?

    you can get someone with vagcom to log some blocks to see how well the maf is flowing air.

    i think logging blocks 002 115 and 118 will give you all the info you need

    do a run in 4th gear from say 2k rpm to redline for a good reading

    Would a faulty MAF sensor not knock the engine malfunction light on tho??

    i get this aswell, i thought it was maybe a dodgy map, ive always ran the car on v-power and ive noticed this little prob since ive had it!

    Might be worth checking out!

    i doubt it's fuel related to be honest. could be the boost control valve playing up.

    Well, the car has had a slightly different instance of the first reported problem...

    Now, i floored the accelerator from about 40 45mph in 5th gear & when the car reached 4000 rpm, it just wouldnt pull anymore! VERY STRANGE!

    I had to back of the gas & then plant my right foot again to get past the 4000rpm point that the car was holding at.

    Im fairly sure this would/could be related to the first problem i posted here at the beginning of the topic.

    HELP!

    When the car hit 4k rpm, it was if it had hit a brick wall, it just wouldnt go any more :-(

    I did back off, then planted it again & it was fine then.

    This just seems to happen if im pulling from a low(ish) rpm in 5th gear.

    Unplug your maf then drive the car, see if the problem goes away ( the car will probably run strangely with it unplugged but you should at least be able to see if the power is there)

    If you can then use all of the power then just replace your maf.

    It could also be coilpack related i believe - or possibly just a dirty connection.

    This probably sounds dumb, but where is the connector that i need to unplug for the MAF?

    By unplugging the MAF connector, what will happen to the car?

    If the car will run fine with the MAF connector unplugged, then i dont see the point of having the MAF connected in the first place.

    Forgive my ignorance please.

    ok, so i think i have found the MAF plug. i dissconnected it, the car seems to have less power, but that said i just went round the corner to the indian takeaway, n the engine was still cold.

    will find out more when i pick the missus up from work later tonight (35mile round trip).

    The engine basically runs on what it considers to be a standard fuel/air mixture

    leavign it unplugged for a long perios of time could potentially **** it right up - so i would defo replace it

    Lets get back to basics - everything is there for a purpose so dont think disconnecting stuff will solve the problem.

    Maybe its time to takwe it to a pro and stop the guess-work

    What do you think the pro does with it?

    Vag Com and a few other checks that you can do yourself.

    Fair enough if its not possible to find the fault then take it a vag expert or whatever, but for things like maf problems there is no need

    I had this problem on my S3 after it was remapped. After some investigations by Awesome GTi they recommended a new MAF, and this fixed the problem PDQ.

    Yea, disconnecting the MAF wont solve the problem but it *will* confirm or otherwise the source of the problem.

    The guy says that performance is slightly worse with MAF disconnected. (It should be day/night difference). Its not unknown for the MAF to slowly degrade overtime, and the problem is said to occur at a point where peak torque arrives.

    Replace the MAF, as the car is a few years old. Check hoses. Check DV. Prepare for a new clutch if it hasn't been replaced already.

    Will driving the car as it is cause any significant problems?

    Im just flat broke at the moment & cant afford to buy a new MAF.

    It shouldnt immediately cause any major problems, no.

    This happened again to me today on the way back from Manchester.

    This time the engine speed was about 3800rpm.

    Once again, backed off, then planted the lead boot again & all was well.

    She did get a bloody good cleaning out on (my own private race track, AKA the A1 heading North, hehe)

    Topped her out around 145mph @ around 5900-6000rpm. Just didnt have anything more left to go.

    Guess what... it did the 'hit the brick wall' scenarios again tonight whilst going to collect the wife from work.

    This time i just keep my right foot planted & something like 2 seconds later it started to pick up ever so slightly. As this was happening, i did then take my foot off the gas pedal & then firmly planted it again, it was as if the car was running fine after i did that. Meaning, it picked up like hell!

    This is starting to pi$$ me off now!

    It really really does sound like the maf, is replace it as soon as you can and take it from there.

    Yes, thats with the MAF connected.

    I only dissconnected it for less than 1 mile about a week or so ago (the car was really lacking in power with the MAF dissconnected).

    This is exactly as I experience it. MAF starting to die.

    Will be like that, tempremental, for a while, and then gradually get worse, or completely crap itself!!

    i had the same problem and it is your MAF sensor.

    but let me give you some advice, dont buy an aftermarket one, buy a proper audi/bosch one. Its worth paying the extra 20 or so you save yourself a few trips takin the bloody things back because they are faulty.

    Trust me, ive had 4 different aftermarket ones upto now, and they were all shafted! Different faults with each one: lagging power, loss of power when warm, total loss of power!

    Yup, and remember to get the part number off the one thats in ur car already, they arent always bosch

    My car has a hitachi maf and i was given 3 different bosch mafs despite telling them that they wouldnt fit, different connections and everything.
