Hello all :hi: First post!

Recencently bought a 2000 Audi S3 210bhp with ESP.

The problem is that it is spinning its front wheels under acceleration.
I read on here somewhere that if you put the hand brake on one notch it turns off the Haldex system. When I do this there is no difference in the wheel spin/reacton of the car. Thus making me think it is the Heldex system that is the problem (think that part alone is about £500).

Again I have read on the forum that it could be a fuse (which one?).

Has anyone had a similar problem or know anything else that may cause it.

Cheers in advance Mike

sorry mate dont know which fuse, but that seems the most probable. if not, take the car back to the seller :D

Have you RTFM?? It might or should say in there to which fuse it should be. Also the back of the fuse box cover is worth checking too.

Sorry whats RTFM? :ermm: I am guessing the owners Manual which i have checked. That was no help, seems to give a few for engine management which i have checked.

RTFM = read the f*&%in Manual

Now that i have worked out what :rtfm: is, can anyone help me with the wheel spinning?

Was playing about with the car tonight. When it does wheel spin it seems to judder through the car as if something is going on. Could the Heldex be switching on and off. I also have a Civic Type R - when that wheel spins, it is alot smoother totally different. (i know it is a different car)

:sos:

take it on a dirty building site type of muddy road or bit of grass somewhere..:rock::rock: give it bit of abuse.. if you go sideways. then the haldex is working :)

if the haldex is working, you will know...even if abusing the clutch in 1st, you'll only get a half second of wheelspin, and thats 4 wheels, so you would feel the difference. i think your haldex is deffo NOT working. take it to a specialist mate, easiest way if the fuse is ok...

As it has been suggested, take it to a specialist or back to where you got it from. Its definately not right. The S3 does not spin its wheels very easily and has to be induced. Either its simple like the fuse or the haldex unit is fubar'd. Has been known to happen and depends on how the previous owner drove it.
Ideally it needs to be plugged into a vag com and checked if there are any faults logged for it.

Now officially a member of the 4 wheel drive club :yahoo:

Big thanks to Jim and Brain over at Star Performance for there help and for replacing the Haldex controller :salute:

What a differences, transformed the car as you would imagine. Now wheres that snow :cold:

did you get a new standard controller, or an uprated "haldex performance part"?

Hi scib4, welcome to the club.

I stay in EK too what colour is S3? just so I can keep an eye out for a fellow
S3 owner. I dont tend to see too many around EK.

Ah snow, i very nearly runined by Xmas a few years back ..... 4WD snow no problem, barrled into a corner, and trouble is, if there aint no grip no amount of wheel drive will get you round!

That said enjoy, I do daily :)

i to may have this problem, i seem to get a lot of wheel spin from the front wheels! is there s fuse that mayhave blown for the haldex system?

dultanur - did you get a new standard controller, or an uprated "haldex performance part"?
Was thinking about getting the uprated controller, but in my opinion how could i improve the car if i do not know what the car drive likes with the standard system working. But it would now be nice for a bit more oversteer.

Hello, My S3 also black :blackrs4: (the fastest colour i believe) You don't happen to have your car chipped by chance? Have been thinking about chipping mine but it would be nice to feel the difference.;)

I would be willing to bet that your Haldex controller is not working. You should not be getting any wheel spin. Best beat would be to take it to a specialist like i did.

Nice one,

Jim and I were talking about your problem earlier. I was there when you called to book the car in. If we'd known for definate that the issue was with the controller, I could have sold you my old one for much cheapness.

Good to hear Jim and Brian sorted you out. Now get back there and get it remapped!

Dam it :keule: ,was not to bad Jim sold me a used controller for okay price i think.
I saw your car when i was there, very nice :hubbahubba: especially those brakes. I was hoping you where going to pick your car up while i was there, so that you could take me out for quick spin and for me to fell the difference with the uprated controller. Is it worth the money, or would i be better spending it on other mods?

Think i am going to have it chipped but jim has recommened the Samco hoses first (wanted;) ) also my car has done 126k bit worried incase it is to much for the old girl. Seems a good one however as i had it on the dyno when i was in 235bhp from a standard 210bhp car:) is this normall? The car is a one old man owner with all work done through Audi no matter how small. Should of helped.

Cheeers :icon_thumright:

Jim said he sold you a used one, I'd just rather have gotten rid of my old one for a reasonable price. Maybe next time. Surprised he didn't take you out in my S3, he's quite proud of his work and he's keen to show it off. The uprated haldex is a very subtle mod. You don't feel it instantly, but when you do notice it, it's very noticable. It gets rid of a lot of understeer, although a similar effect can be had with uprated ARBs.

If your car has a good service history, then remapping shouldn't be a problem even with a higher mileage motor. Jim would give the car a good going over to make sure all's well before he did anything.

And his rolling road is damn good. If it's saying 235, it'll be 235. Done on a cold day by any chance?

Scib4,

Unfortunatley my car is standard too, Mines is a 99 V plate on 72k miles so I am a bit unsure about chipping it but for just now I am happy with it the way it is. I may change my mind in the future though.

Again, with only 72k it shouldn't be a problem. But if you were to get it remapped, makesure you take it to somewhere that will run a diagnostic check and give the car a once over to make sure it's suitable.

Then again, you're probably best keeping it standard. Remaps are dangerous, I had one once now I'm broke :)

The uprated ARBs are on the list jim is saying go for the R32 not the after market ones (can't remember the make), but i read (Glen i think) that they are a equal increase in resitance to the standard ones which would not really reduce understeer just that you would be trying harder. So not to sure.

As for the Dyno run typical Scottish day, so yes a bit cold which could explain it. :detective2:

My S3 is not well again :crying: , the Haldex controller seems to of gone for the 2nd time in 6 months as there is no power going to the rear wheels

Looks like Jim (Star) will be getting a call tomorrow morning

Any idea why its gone again?

This happened to me 3 yeats ago the n/s front wheel would overspin independantly from the other wheels causing me to spin the car - after this happened twice I ended up p/x the car with Audi as it was kind of dangerous and 2 different garages were asking high money to just investigate the issue which was probably a knackered haldex
