Grinding noise when cornering

Hi Chaps,

Recently I have noticed a worrying grinding noise coming from my NSF wheel when taking tight right-handers. I have only started noticing this as I now drive the car to work and park in a multi-storey, and get the noise when turning onto the ramps to go between levels (quite tight corners). It sounds very mechanical (like the grinding of gears), rather than something rubbing.

Has anyone experienced this problem before, or have any idea what might be causing it. Any help would be much appreciated!

FYI: it is an A3 1.8T Quattro on a Y plate, with 225 40 R18 wheels. No other mods.

Could be as simple as one of your CV joints, try putting the wheel on full lock then have a look at the rubber boot just behind the hub, if thats slipped off or has any holes in it then its likely the joint is fecked - there is also an inner joint but i dont know how you would see that without the car on a ramp.

Is this something I should be concerned about (ie. get it fixed asap)? The car is going in for a service on tuesday so will try to get them to look at it then. Any idea if this is likey to wipe out my bank account just before xmas? :S

It shouldn't be too much money but dealers charge a fair bit for labour so that's what'll bump it up! It's always best to get it looked at asap just incase it is anything else or incase it gets worse!

If it's doing it at slow speed I think it's likely to be a CV joint. If it's more pronounced at high speed it could be a wheel bearing, but that's usually more of a droning noise than grinding.

I think the clunking generally appears on the opposite side to your steering (so clunking when steering right suggests a problem with a joint on the left-hand side) which would go along with your right-hand/NSF combo.

Check out jesters3 post here, that's what you're looking for. Worst case is a knackered CV joint requiring a new driveshaft, failing that £10 for a new gaiter + half an hours labour.

sound like a wheel bearing cv's tend to clunk

If its either of the two then it is something you should have replaced fairly quickly, particularly if its the wheel bearing as they have a nasty habit of killing the carriers on audis for some reason if left for long.

I wouldnt reccomend letting audi do it tho, its a straightforward thing that anybody should be able to do without charging £100/hour labour

Yeah, I never go to the dealers. Found a nice little VAG specialist, who have always been top-notch, and reasonably priced (labour £40ish an hr).

I had a similair sounding problem which i found to be the track arm end pushing the bent brake dust shield onto my front disk when at full lock. Horrendous grinding noise sorted with a quick thumb tweak of the dust shield! :icon_thumright:

Could be your brake pads have worn down, however when I got my motor lowered there was a metallic screetch coming from the shield on the brakes - simply pull it out a little and this cured the problem.
