Just a quick and simple question as im in a debate with someone, Is the S3 permanent 4 wheel drive (which is what I thought) or is it only 4 wheel drive when needed? thanks

only when needed

when the front wheels start to slip the rears are fed power via the haldex system.

read up on the differences between haldex and torsen quattro if you're interested.

you have a haldex in the S3, i.e. FWD until front wheels slip or full throttle, then 4wd.

well ill be damned i never knew that!

is that the same for mine? (quattro t sport)

All 'quattro' A3/s3's (8P and 8L) and TT's are haldex, not torsen.

So its official then its only 4wd when needed!!!!!! thanks another agument i've lost lol:mad:

it is as above, but dont udersetimate it, its 4x4 more than you think.

Even more so when remapped.

mash the throttle, even in the druy, and your soon in 4x4.

its easier to detect when haldex is disabled, (ie when handbrake is up a one notch, haldex disables on braking signal) then when its active.
