Urgent Advice Needed Please with my Audi S3

I have a huge problem at the moment with my 2000 Audi S3, When starting my engine from cold, there is a huge whirring type sound coming from the engine bay, when i turn the car of the noise starts to slows down after about 10 seconds.

It is definatly not the fan or belt as far as i know.

When i turn the car on it does the same process, but on the third time of starting the noise disappears.

Any help or suggestions would be much appreciated as this is a little worrying

I know you say it's definitely not the fan, how come?

There are only two things that carry on spinning for that long after the engine has been turned off. The aux water pump and the fan as it gradually slows down..

Oil level seems fine, an nothing comes up on the level checking system on the dash either. But it only seems to happen when i start it from cold first thing in the morning today and late last nite after being parked all day.

I suppose the only reason why i think its not the fan is because i presume i would see it moving or a broken belt, but its is very possible it may have something to do with that as my knowledge under the engine is very basic.

What signs should i be looking for to what may be the sorce of the problem

yes, by the aux water pump.

to me it sounds like the bearing in one of the fans or the viscous coupling in the second fan.

But the fan is definatly not turning when i switch itoff so may well be the aux water pump, could i do serious damage if i even attempt to drive it with the pump possibly not working?

I see thats possibly it, is it an easy job to replace or should i take it to a specialist, would i have to replace the whole unit or could i just replace the parts needed.
But how come after running the car after 10 minutes the sound is never to be heard again

really? 1 fan should be running permanently while the engine is on. Do neither fans run while the engine is on?

Does it sound like a jet engine??

If so its the secondary air pump, they get worn and get noisy, my mechanic said its nothing major to worry about.

Its purpose is to blow extra air down the exhaust on start up to prevent the cat getting clogged with unburnt fuel!!

In response to the first question the smaller fan at the bottom of the engine is always running even after i turn the car off for five minutes, which i presume is normal.

As far as sounding like a jet engine that is a spot on description, it seems to sound like its turbine is spooling up and when i turn it of it sounds like a turbine powering down.
Does this sound ever disappear away aftertime, an i suppose it is still doing its job but just in a very noisy fashion.

It will dissapear about one to two minutes after driving, some people choose to sit and wait for it to stop before moving the car but i just get moving and it soon goes.

Bit embarrasing sometimes though lol its so loud!! ha ha

Yes its still doing its job but just noisily as you said, my mate who works at vw said if it bothers me that much he will change it but its not really worth it!!
