Do not know much about cars, What MPG do all you people get for normal driving around town ?

My MPG indicator says about 20 MPG /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif , i take it this is not normal and the car does seem a little thirsty even though i have not booted it yet.

Could a dodgy Bosch DV cause poor consumption figures ?

Please Help as i will on the phone to the Dealer !

Are you on the overall average MPG setting on the live 'as you drive' setting?

The average on mine is currently 25.3mpg (was a bit higher but I keep letting the G/Friend drive it!) and I do mostly town driving...

Dodgy diverter valve may be a cause for low MPG... best get one ordered ASAP...

MPG will always suffer a lot if you have aircon compressor on all the time. In my 1.8T I have it turned off most of the time, using it when the car needs cooling or if the windscreen is fogging up and you hit the demist button. It clears in seconds. Never seen anything like it.
My 1.8T gives about 35mpg average, and I'm more than happy with that. It went up to about 39 when I ran on Optimax and did a bit more motorway driving than usual.

Maybe if the ford escort behind me this morning had a decent demist button, he wouldn't have smacked into my bumper and destroyed the offside corner. Big cracks/scrapes, bumper support is bent, lights and other panels seem ok. No visible damage to boot floor and lights all ok. His escort has a bent bonnet, bumper, possibly front wing, headlight/light cluster exploded. So, just waiting for directline to sort out details.... and hoping the repair company will be able to match the "Berry" paint colour properly...

How can you tell ?

Which one is which there is one that goes up and down all the time sometimes it said 200MPG then goes down !

Harsh mate, ****** Ford Drivers should not be allowed on the road, should of hit him one and told him to get a decent car and learn how to drive, hope you sort out your bumper m8 soon, goodluck !

One will have a kind of 0 symbol next to it - that's the avergage one. It will change more gradually than the other.
I think the "live" one is meant to change every 30 meters or something like that. The one in a friend's golf changed about twice as fast as mine though so maybe it updates faster on newer A3's too.
I think there are 4 things shown as you scroll through them using the up/down button on the wiper stalk:

estimated miles left in tank, based on current driving,
average mpg since you last reset this average mpg
live mpg
time spent driving since last reset

To reset the average mpg and time settings, display the value (e.g. time) and hold in the reset button on the underneath of the wiper stalk. It should reset to zero. If you press the reset button quickly it will turn the whole digital panel off/on.

If you drive along and then change to neutral and coast, the live mpg will probably change to ---
If you leave it in gear and remove your foot from the gas, it will probably say something like 98, 175 or 200, which kind of makes sense since you're not really feeding the car much fuel. If you drive up to lights and go to neutral then depending on when the display last updated, it will probably just remain at a normal value like 25mpg or similar.

Cheers.

I forgot average speed. This resets the same as the others.

Scotty, first off, the DIS can be wrong, check it tank to tank to make sure your getting a proper reading. Mine reads about 10-15% over.

Overall I get about 28-29, but it varies from about 25 to 34 when taking it super easy on the motorway.

Yeah, i get roughly the same! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif

Mine has given me an average of 28.8 for a trip to London & back to Kent on sunday, which included about 45 mins sitting in traffic trying to get through the blackwall tunnel, moving about half a car length every 5 mins!!!

I was quite pleased with that, as i only picked up the car on saturday, so does include the first bit of playing!! /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

mine has never dropped below 30mpg on a bog standard 1.8t thats with a mix of town and motorway driving.
the motorway stuff is normal cruising @ 90-100mph

I usually get around 30mpg depending what fuel I use and what mood I`m in!

Best I`ve seen is 34mpg /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/groovy.gif

Worst I`ve had is 17mpg /ubbthreads/images/graemlins/jawdrop.gif

Mind you, that was on the route 2 in Germany at a steady 140/145 mph.
