    Oil Pump Failure

    Hi all,

    Has anybody had their oil pump fail? Or anyone replaced it? I've read a few threads on ukmkivs, and they seem to die around 100k miles. Mines at 98 at the moment, so this maybe an up and coming DIY job.

    Looks simple enough in Haynes, 4 steps after you remove the sump, basically undo the bolts holding it in place, release the pump sprocket from chain and refit. But the haynes manual gives it a 4 spanner rating!

    Symptoms from those Golf's affected include loud "tappet" sound from power steering pump/charcoal cannister, which mine has recently developed. Power steering seems fine, and don't know what the charcoal cannister does.

    Has anyone done this DIY job and can point to a how to? Or am I gonna have to do my own???

    Anybody shed any light?

    i'd be interested to hear the outcome on this one, mine has 96k and I dont think it has been done

    It's not majorly difficult if you know your way around an engine... bit fiddly because of it's location, especially if you'll be doing it on the floor! but other than what the manual says (which I'm unsure of to be honest because I've not read it!) it shouldn't cause you any major problems... the sprocket is physically bolted to the pump so undoing the bolts is all that is required to remove it. Actually getting it out of the chain may be a bit fiddly but if you've removed the tensioner you'll should manage ok. Just be careful with the tensioner because it's plastic!

    One thing I would look out for on a car with your mileage is the condition of the sump bolts themselves. There are quite a lot of them and if only one seizes or has a dodgy head then you won't be able to get the sump off. Just take care when removing them and make sure they are as clean as possible before trying to turn them.

    tappety sound from the charcol filter is normal.

    it is recylcling the fumes from the petrol tank and burning them off in the engine.

    the tappety sound is the solenoid valve opening and closing to regulate the release into the engine.

    So what is the consensus then? Is this a potential problem and worth doing on higher mileage cars as a precaution? My S3 is at 86K and so I too would be interested in this.

    Has anyone had an oil pump fail on an S3 or heard of it happening?

    Not the pump itself under normal conditions but I saw the results of a high power S3 (400BHP+) snapping the chain tensioner and consequently getting caught in the oil pump pickup recenty...

    God only knows how it got in there though... given the strainer graduation! :eek:

    this happened to a lad who i work with (he drives A4 sport 1.8T)

    4 new pistons later all is ok !!

    My oil pump went at 80k although the oil pressure light came on periodically from about 65k but gradually got worse. I got it done by a garage which was about 140 inc labour.

    What car was this on Alec?

    Were there any other symptoms apart from the warning light, such as a louder tick over from that side of the engine? Mine has just sounded a bit louder over the last couple of months as described at the start of this thread, and intermittently there has been a much louder tappety sound (used to the charcoal filter sound so it's not this I don't think).

    It was only ever the warning light until the very end when I drove it home one night it sounded like I was driving with no engine oil, I never drove it after that until I got the oil pump changed.

    Did you do this yourself Andy or get it fitted by a specialist? How much did this cost in total?

    Don't know what to do now as wasn't aware this was a problem before with 1.8Ts until this thread.

    I got it done buy a garage who did my cambelt before I first bought the car.
    190 all in. Pump itself is 85 from stealers and fitting requires dropping the sump off and swapping over.

    It seemed like quite a simple job, but Haynes gives it a 4/5 difficulty rating, so decided to stay clear. DIY'd my cambelt and that was hard enough at 3/5!!

    Was the garage able to comment on the condition of the old pump and has the tappet sound you originally described gone now?

    I had the old pump back, and to be honest it didn't look at all bad. It still rotated smoothly and didn't seem impeded in operation at all. That's not to say it wouldn't have spontaneously packed up.

    The oil pick up line, however, was cloggedwith sh!t. All small particles etc. I'd say it was about 40% blocked. Never had any oil warning lights at all.

    The line that comes out of the black (power steering??) pump, perpendicular to the line where the bonnet meets the wing was pressured and I could feel it pulsing about 2-3 times a second before I had it replaced, and now it is completely smooth and not pulsing whatsoever.

    It went in on thursday and I haven't heard the tappety sound coming from where it was since before it was done. So I feel confident it's sorted. Don't mistake the sound from a similar one which should come from the engine.

    I would say that it's more the pick up line that will cause the problems, but the pump may as well be done while the sump's off for the sake of 85 vs 1,000's for serious engine damage.

    Let me know what happens with yours if/when you have it done.

    i had my pump changed in April 2006. After about 2 hours, the warning light came on again. Took it to another garage, they said it was the pick up line, Cost me 90 pound to have it removed and cleaned. Today, after booting the car a little around town, once the oil was hot, same thing. The oil light comes on. If you continue to drive the car, the engines goes loud and sounds like a diesel. I gave the garage a call, they said its likely that the pick up line is blocked up again. I just bought a new line for 7.25 from the dealers. Gonna fit it tomrrow myself.

    One thing thats scaring me. After this problem, i left the car for about an hour to cool down. I then drove the car around 7 miles (never booted it though). The car ran fine. No oil light came on. Can this be the pick up line which got blocked because it picked up some dirt, or is it possible that the oil pump (dealer part replaced in april 2006) is playing up?

    i've decided, a new pick up line and a new oil pump for mine.... at 97k, I think its a good idea!

    I did mine yesterday. Although i didnt have to replace the oil pump this time (it was replaced in april this year), the pickup pipe was replaced. (Between april and now, i have had three oil changes and still the pipe gets clogged!).

    Anyway so far, so good!

    does the oil pump have to be timed to the engine? do you use good quality oil? what kind of stuff bloks the pickup pipe? is it a black gloopy substance?

    The terminology is confusing me here - are people talking about the same thing when they say oil pick up line and oil pickup pipe. I have had the "oil strainer" changed on mine, which I took to be the same thing. Is that correct?

    No problem with my oil pick up pipe/line when I last checked it at ~120k miles.

    I use only good quality synthetic oil which gets changed regularly, and the car always gets regular long blasts. If that helps.

    it is ov odd the pickup line/pipie getting blocked in mnadeem1984's engine in under a year! when e3ngines can do 120K and still be fine! i know in diesel engine soot can form in engine and the causes a black sludge which can obstruct oil flow. but soot isnt normally a problem in petrol engines unless there is a leaky piston ring or a rich fuel mix! vbmenu_register("postmenu_260554", true);

    it had two or three granule type of things (looked like rice or something). I also found some excess sealant which the company used last time to seal the sump. I aint driven the car hard yet. Gonna try tomorrow to see what it does.

    Hi,

    I have a Audi A3 1.8T and a couple of month's ago I had a problem with the oil light turning on.

    The oil level was Ok, the car went to be repaired and since then the ligth came on twice and then never came back again.

    I made a search on the web, found this thread and since my car is almost at the 99K miles I'm worried.

    My engine is a AGU and I would like to know if I should replace the Oil pump or not ? Does this problem happens with all the 1.8T engines ?

    7 months later I finally got it changed. I had no symptoms or reason to change it apart from preventative maintenence. I had some other work done so thought i'd get it all done at the same time.

    My S3 had done 103k at the time and the original pump and pick up looked fine, no visible wear or gunk build up, but then I have changed the oil 5 times in 12k

    So, what should I do ?

    Replace it ? Or leave it ?

    I change my oil every 5k miles, I guess it wont get very dirty
    with that mileage.

    Can anyoene provide the part numbers of the oil pump and oil pickup line ?

    it's up to you, worse case scenario is that it does fail and you get a warning light, in which case turn your engine off immediatley and get it recovered. I did it for piece of mind/out of interest/and a good selling point IMO.....

    if you;re doing it yourself get the prices etc from your local audi dealer, and it not then get the garage to quote all in.

    you will need to change oil pump, pick up pipe, sump bolts, and will need new sump liquid gasket, but be careful with that as if you put too much around the sump it could dry and get picked up by your pump......

    my s3 is doing the same thing! I does supose any of you have the part number for the oil pick up line? as my audi are rubbish!
