Thread: Clutch cost?

    Clutch cost?

    Was driving down the motorway on Friday at about 4,000 revs... I put my foot down and the car revved to about 6,000 without accelerating - sounds like the clutch to me although after I eased off it was fine, and it was also fine driving round after that - even under hard acceleration...

    Question is, that if it is the clutch (is it?), how much am I looking at on an !.8 Turbo Quattro Sport???

    How much would a standard one be (fitted) at an Audi specialists and what recommendations are there for an upgraded one. DOn't really want to be spending a fortune if at all poss???

    Sounds like your clutch for sure. Mine did exactly that, intermittently too, which was strange but a new clutch sorted me out.

    As you have a remap you should consider an uprated clutch. The bulk of the cost for clutches is labour so an uprated one will not be that much more than standard.

    Mine is an uprated MTM clutch, supplied and fitted by independent Audi specialist, still big bucks though: 900. (Audi main dealer quoted me 1,100 for a standard one!)

    Let me know how much it costs and wherer you get it from mate. I've seen a clutch kit including the flywheel on ebay for 450. I just guess it depends on how many hours it takes to have done?

    Thats the only thing putting me off having a remap, as I need to factor in the cost of a new clutch and maybe flywheel too.

    Had an OEM fitted by a local independent and it was 600 all in.

    Yep, that was the clutch included.
    Had it done at Autotest on the sirport industrial estate. Always take my wifes GTi there. really nice guy, (David) knows his stuff and is also very well regarded for his wheel alignment services. (that how I first got to know him)

    HOW MUCH???? Jeez, that's an unwelcome surprise.... what with my 24mpg and up to 900 for a new standard clutch, i may as well be driving a 911!!!!!!
    Anyone wanna buy an Audi with a dodgy clutch?

    I have my remap removed cos of the quote on the clutch. With a quattro box you are looking at loads of cash - I was quoted 1500 at the specialist I use cos they automatically include the flywheel in the quote (~400 in it's own right) the cost is labour though cos there is an awful lot of gearbox to get out of a small hole!

    Needsless to say I am still running my orginal clutch and the factory power output..

    A Fidanza flywheel and a Helix clutch; complete you are looking at 770 plus the fitting.

    That's interesting. So the clutch was failing with the remap but works OK when back to standard? So it wasn't damaged beyond repair, rather it just couldn't cope with the extra torque? I would have thought once it was knackered there was no going back.

    Nope, mine was fine too when running standard map so I could have just kept the Revo switched off. (it was just the extra torque that was killing it.)
    Couldn't live without the remap though so 600 was happily spent

    Been told its good for approx 310 lbs ft, so unless I give it loads of beans from the lights, it should be fine.
    My traffic light GP days are long gone, thats for losers

    if ti does fail, I'll pay 600 and then sell the car !

    So i was just wonerding before i go ahead and fork out a fortune for this new clutch... could it have been a blip? I mean, i ws flying along when i decided to give it a bit of extra welly at which point it revved from 4.5k to about 6.5k but it only did it the one time.

    Since then i've put my foot down a bit and no problem whatsoever although i've not done that many miles - also, to test the clutch as i've been driving along at about 20mph, i've eased my left foot onto the clutch and there's about an inch of give before it starts revving which i think is kind of normal, no?

    Is there any other way of checking?

    do a hilll start on a fairly steep hill, set off and if the revs race up and you hardly set off then the clutch is dead.

    This works on 2wd dunno about 4wd ??

    Well, since i first posted this, I'm thinking my clutch is fine - i've done a few miles with a car full of people (4 adults) and didn't have any problems at all - even on hill starts.

    I spoke to an Audi specialist recently and he reckoned it could be to do with the warm weather. It only happened once, after i'd been driving for a while, hot day and in 6th gear on the motorway.

    The 700 i decided not to fork out on the extended warranty is looking like money well saved at the moment!

    i have this spec type clutch for sale 160 for the biturbo but may fit others would need to cross ref with etka

    I've just been quoted 485 inc fitting and vat from my local Seat dealers on a clutch for my S3 using real parts am i missing somthing.

    i dont understand why people have so many problems with the clutch??? are you all doing F1 starts day in day out? Im on my second remapped S3 now and they are or were on the standard clutch and still fine after many miles of remapped driving.

    No, we're not doing F1 starts. As I commented on a similar thread, some standard clutches take the remap and last for years, others start slipping quite quickly.

    My advice to anyone considering a remap is to bear in mind that they MIGHT have clutch trouble soon after, and to factor in the POSSIBLE additional expense.

    I reckon that at least 25% of remapped cars need a new clutch, which is a significant number, but most get away with it, like your two cars.

    I'm gutted it happened to me as it cost me 900 for an uprated clutch, but I'm confident it will last the lifetime of the car now.

    I think its more down to peoples driving styles, some may slip the clutch more on initial starts or even gear changes, some ppl may be snappy and quick with the clutch. Dont know which causes clutches to wear the quickest but im sure they do wear differently with different driveing styles.

    Good point, and combined with increased torque in-gear leads to very quick wear out.

    Thats what I would be thinking the price would be too?

    Great call - forgot about them.... that's also probably where i'll be taking my car for a minor service too.

    As for driving styles, I've never had to replace a clutch in 14 years of constant driving - I also never really put my foot down until my foot's off the clutch either.

    Having said all that my clutch is still fine so I'm thinking the slip was a one-off and down to the heat

    My clutch slip was intermittent when it first started, in fact it "went away" for about a month before returning. Hope that's not the case for you though!

    I had exactly the same symptoms as monkeytrousers. Intermittent clutch slippage. Mine actually "went away" for the whole summer only to return when the weather got cooler and also I had an overboost issue due to an air leek.

    Turned out that a bearing the in clutch mechanism was leaking oil onto the clutch plate causing it to slip. The warmer weather over the summer meant the car was making less power and so no slipping. As the oil was in a particular place on the plate it did not slip all the time anyway.

    Still needed the clutch replacing to fix it but it was not caused by the remap and the clutch was certainly not worn out. The remap simply made the slipping more likely to occur because of the increased torque.

    I would think that most people with low milage cars that don't spend all their time doing 1/4 mile starts have this to blame for slipping clutches. Many people with modified cars have stated that the standard clutch is up to the job.

    Mine did exactly the same in my Golf TDI 150. Ended up shelling out 500 for a Sach's clutch. Its to do with the extra torque that is put out by the remap. Don't hold me to this but I think you can get away with an uprated Torque transfer plate (a lot cheaper than the whole clutch assembly) as the friction is better thus not slipping. Hope this helps however it puts me off (a little) remapping the S3 when it arrives!

    I found that i used to hover my left foot over the clutch pedel (without noticing) and that i would sumtimes even rest my foot on it. Soon after i noticed problems with my clutch (not s3 but a golf) I also heard (could be bullsh!T) that resting your left hand on the gear box is bad for the clutch...
