I have bought an audi a3 sport but I don't have a Remote Transponder. I see you can buy them on ebay but how do you find out what will work with my car.

Can anyone help?

buying used blippers on ebay is a bit of a minefield. It's not a case of just buying a key with the same part number (or frequency), but getting the immob. coded to your ecu - this can cost a bit if you dont know your SKC and have access to VAG-COM.

When we bought our A3, it only came with one key. I searched around a few local autolocksmiths but none of them had the technology to cut the key AND program the transponder.

In the end I had to goto Audi. I asked the audi dealer, if I managed to get hold of a key from EBAY then could they program that, and they said they could, but couldn't guarantee the key would be compatible. In the end I paid Audi £125 all in for the spare key which they supplied, and its now completely guarenteed.

Thats what I got off my local dealership, 1 in 10 might work after the download from Germany, he said just bin it.

Central Audi though who are a specialist nr Manchester I think said they could probably do it and not to believe everyone you speak with at the dealers, swings and roundabouts!

I just bought 1 from ebay for 24 quid. Got a blade cut 14 quid and programmed it 0 quid. gets you in the car and all blipper functions work, car starts and runs till the ecu says there is no transponder within 2 inches of the steering columb, am about to approach audi to get a price, will let you know.

ps. make sure the numbers on the inside of the working key and prospective buy key are the same (operating frequency)

AFAIK, you need a key with the right code (4DO..., 8PO..., etc.), the immobiliser code (on the plastic key tag) and VAG-COM to reprogram things.

Just got a key off ebay to sort out a Clifford alarm install with remote start, I'll let you know how the re-programming goes...

Guys..... Ive done this to death.... There is a seller on Ebay and he is very good and provide cut keys and immobiliser transponders to requirements and is also quite cheap. So all you need is a working remote part and key part housing and he can supply the blade.

If you need the transponder part then you need to find out what year your car is and whether its an Immo II or Immo III typ immobiliser (change over around 2000). Then you can use VAGcom to program the new transponder in (you need all your keys tho).

I'll just need to dig out the sellers name BRB....

The sellers ebay name is simply "auto-locksmith".

I had mine cut via a photo and it worked a treat and he supplied me a transponder for a fiver or something. Although I had to reuse and old pin (that holds the blade in).

To take apart the key blade housing to change the trasponder you need to carefully prise the Audi badge off and there is a screw underneath..... You then need to be careful how you take it apart as the blade is obviously spring loaded, Note how it sits so you can put it back in correctly..... its obvious where the transponder goes....

Worked a treat for me..... just finding the right frequency remote can be a bit hit and miss. I bought 3 in total and had to sell one on....

so in summary there are 3 parts to the key.. Blade, Transponder and remote.... this guy will sort you out with 2 (providing you have Vagcom). and the remotes are sometime trail and error but a matching part number and a new battery will see you right for the remote......
Hope that helps....
Cheers.
Mark.

Ah lovely, I have the blade cut to my ignition already-1 thing I am wondering is if the frequency will be the same, I got a new shape key, and mine is the square older shape key, I guess this would make a difference?

Open up the keys as if you were taking the battery out. There should be a code in there, starting with 4DO or 8PO or something like that. The two keys should have matching numbers
