resynchronising remote

I've replaced batteries but can't get the car to open via the remote, I am using the key at the moment. The instructions are a bit vague in the booklet. What is the correct procedure?

It's something like put the key in the ignition, switch to on position and then press either lock or unlock button, unlock I think. Vague but it's been a long time since I had to do it.
