Hi there. So i picked up a 8l S3 today and there is a slight problem

When im going along in 5th or 6th gear 50mph+, and take my foot off the accelerator there is a very annoying loud 'whining' sound which drops down with the speed of the car.

When the whining occurs and i put the clutch in, it makes no difference. When i accelerate, it goes again.

Now, since i only got the car very recently i havent had time to inspect this problem fully.

I suspect the following

-Wheel bearing
-worn out tyres
-haldex (knowing my luck this is what it will be)

Have any of you Audi owners had this problem??

take it back to the seller

take it back to the seller

Well taking it back isn't an option, I got it at a bargain price knowing it wasn't perfect, I don't mind spending a bit of cash putting it right, i could just do with a few pointers towards what it could be from people who have had the same problem

I would guess at wheel bearing or CV joint from what you decribe

I would recommend taking it to a Auid/VW specialist to have diagnosed.

If the noise specifically appears when only in 5th or 6 th, then I would suspect gearbox..

Wheel bearing, are you sure its not louder at higher speed not necessarily high gear?

jack it up so both front wheels are off the floor and spin a wheel, if you can hear it clicking or making a noise then it could be the centre diff.

Make sure all bolts on wheels are tight, jack it up and give each wheel a wiggle back and forth. If one of them wobbles about, probably that wheel bearing that's gone.

If it only does it in 5th and 6th gear I would say it's pretty much going to be a gearbox issue. Change the clutch while you have got the gearbox out.
Does it do the same if in 4th at 50mph ?.
A good independednt garage would probably have a quick look and diagnose the problem, At least you got it cheap.

Wheel Bearings
Transfer Box
Rear Diff
Gearbox

Im not even gonna start on why you didnt take it out for a testdrive first

just a quick update.

I changed the wheels to another set i had and the problem is completely gone

its tyres mine does the same, usually occurs when the fronts have more tread than the rears
