Got in my car this morning, (in first gear) foot on the clutch, started the engine and it lurched forward like it was in gear.

then when I finally got it in neutral and started the engine, it would not go into any gears...

Please could someone help or advise what the problem is? would it be a snapped cable?

Sounds like the clutch needs bleeding or the salve cylinder has let go, no cable clutches on these, only cables are for the gear linkages.

oh dear, that sounds Grim!, what would be the tell tell signs? a pile of clutch fluid on the floor

I did pump the clutch 20-30 times this morning when I was trying to get it in gear this...The pedal did feel normal to be honest no floppy or limp.:readit: should I give it a good pumping session?

Is it the same with engine on and off?
Mine did this a few years back, was stuck in third, culprit was snapped selector prong. Made the mistake of nursing it home riding clutch to get going, ruined it. Prob would had have new clutch anyway whilst apart.

It's probably not the same as mine, as once it went that was it, couldn't get into neutral or any other gear.

Mine went like that. It was a clip that cost 20 quid runs like a dream now.

So. I had had the car diagnosed with "needs new dual mass flywheel and clutch" by my local mechanic who quoted £1000 and had the same symptoms as me (wouldn't go into gear when stationary) and by someone else around £500 so I was just coming to terms with the cost of it when I thought.... I will just sit in the old girl and give the gears another go and hey presto, all the gears work. So I took her for a small drive. And all seems fine.

So do I get the work done anyway or continue to drive it until it goes wrong again or will I do even more damage?

Note, I did just sit in the car stationary and pump the clutch and there was a change in tone in either the engine or clutch, is this the thrust bearing?

Advice please. Thanks

Sounds like they trying to pull your pants down !
Take it to a specialist. Not sure where you are, but I always use Mids VW, very helpful and reasonably priced.

It's not going to fix itself and likely to do more damage/leave you stuck somewhere. Id get it done.

if it needs work have it done
but make sure you get done whats needed
sounds like the garage was trying to have you over
