Hi guys, so I have had my mechanic take a look at my car because of a rear wheel locking issue when turning sharp corners. He wasn't 100% sure if it was just a simple task of replacing the haldex oil and filter, or if it required to replace the whole haldex system. He's calling me back later this afternoon after he talks to his brother who is an Audi specialist to get his opinion.

Would it be worth replacing the oil and new filter to see if it will correct the issue? It will cost me $350 AUD to replace the oil and filter, so I don't want to be spending money on something that doesn't need to be renewed/replaced. If it is the Haldex system i'm guessing im looking at $1000. How do I know if it just needs to have the oil changed? or if it needs the whole system changed?

Thanks!

What workshop do you take it too? sounds like you should take it somewhere the knows the system better!

Do you have a aftermarket controller? I have the "Competition" Haldex controller which behaves like your describing. This is the correct operation.

I know a few people who get their R32 golfs services at Prestige and Performance in brisbane if your near there. They should understand the system.

The service kit is only $75 from ECS tunning Audi TT MKI Quattro 225HP Drivetrain Haldex ES#3070 Haldex Service Kit - G052175A1-KIT

will be $60 postage to Australia but (Buy a heap of stuff at once ;) )

My mechanic called back and said that he would feel more comfortable for me to take it to Audi so it can have a diagnosis done to be 100% sure what's the actual issue. Diagnosis is $195 from Audi, do you know what the cost for a diagnosis at Prestige and performance? I live only 10 minutes from them. And you say your haldex system behaves like mine, are you trying to fix it too?

Thanks for the help

No not trying to fix it. The 'Competition' Haldex controller is designed to have the rear wheels engaged 100% of the time, so it is behaving as it should.

I have no idea on P&Ps pricing, I personally havent used them. But their pricing is much better than VW servicing going by pricing mates have been quoted/charged. Would expect it to be much better than Audi.

I would suggest giving them a call or even dropping down and showing them straight up. They might be able to diagonsie it straight away if they ahve seen it before.

Why don't you get the kit and change oil/filter yourself. That should be relatively cheap. Then if it doesn't work...go down the replacing haldex route. If you have a look people have often found that oil/filter change is all that was needed.

Do a search, theres lots of info on this issue and there are a number of us that are having the same problem

Some of the things to check are the earth strap at the bottom of the car, make sure its solid and secure, check that the fuse hasnt blown, if its ok, remove it and see if you still have the problem, obviously the haldex oil and filter change may help too.

A few people have replaced the Haldex controller, the pump and even the rear diff.

Hope that helps.
