You need to check, on my old A3 they were H7/H7 main/dipped, although many online checkers said they would be H7/H1.

And yes, HID bulbs will be fine in those projectors with the usual caveats around legality and some folks insistence that there is a difference between HID and Halogen projectors.

My old A3 kit consisted of the usual ballast but with D2S leads from the ballast to the bulb. I purchased some D2S to H7 converter plates from eBay USA which enabled me to run some decent Phillips 4300k D2S bulbs.

In my current S3, as one of my OEM ballasts went wrong, I've installed a 50w kit also using D2S bulbs, but this time 5000k for a bit more whiteness. I find anything towards 6000k a bit blue for my liking.

Could be the lenses also, they split and appear yellow.

I'd go with osram nightbreakers if you want to stay halogen, better output than regular bulbs and are whiter looking and as for restoring the headlights, wet and dry and a polish brings them up well, depends how far gone they are really, I had to go down to 600 and then followed with 800,1200,1500,2000 then rubbing compound and then a final polish with srp.
