A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

Have the following running problem with my A3 1.8T, only happens when cold, the car hesitates/surges when using very light throttle ??
I've just replaced the MAF, didn't have any effect on the problem although the car feels stronger throghout the rev range, also has the following fault code :- 17608 - Boost Pressure Control Valve (N249): Mechanical Malfunction
P1200 - 35-00 - -
Not convinced the above fault is anything to do with the cold running though, any help or info would be great.

Currently having this issue with my AUM engined Golf (same as A3).

Found the heating element for the post CAT lambda probe not functioning.

Will be swapping out the probe shortly. I'll post if it makes a difference.

That will depend on whether it comes out easy or not. It shouldnt be too dear but sometimes they seem to weld themselves into the exhaust!

Let me know how you get on jiffi. I have a similar problem with mine. I had the throttle valve replaced at a stealer and then had the MAF done. Still does it when cold up to about 4000ish then pulls harder again. Very annoying!!!

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

I've been having the exact same problem and done all the usual like replaced the MAF. Really interested to know what cures this for you. Hope you get to the bottom of it soon. It must be a sensor but ive had a few changed. The problem is still there even though i can live with it it is a pain in the butt. Its only noticeable when its cold up to like u said 4000rpm ish when applying very light acceleration.

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

We've got poor running problems with our Golf too...jerkiness when cold. Just not had time to investigate it due to investigating my S3's problems.

I have uploaded some docs from the Elsawin Technical Service Handbook...see the links below...

The first extract refers to "Jerky cold running"...and in turn references the second extract below.

Jerkiness Poor Performance 1.8T and V6 Turbo

Cleaning of Coked Engine Parts

Hope they help.

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

Sorry, not had a chance to get involved yet.

I did have a rethink the other day tho and I've decided to change the coolant temp sender and clean out the throttle body instead. Partly because I like to start cheap first and partly because even a faulty post cat lambda heat should make the car run like it is at the mo.

Soonest I'll be able to work on the car is monday as I'm out of the country unitl then.

I will post results for sure.

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

How cool is my girlfriend!

She called me to say the car was playing up again and was getting on her nerves. I said I can't fix it till monday.

She then said, wheres the parts? I'll do it!
I was like, okay.....cool. I explained what to do and off she went.

Anyways, she's swapped the coolant temp sender over and so far, so good. The car is behaving when cold. She went out early this morning as it was very cold and gave it another go. Again it was okay.

When I get back home I'm gonna give it a once over with VAG-COM etc and if its fine for a week I'm going to say its cured.

Clever girl!!!

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

Update:

The temp sensor has not cured the problem. Its still running wrong when really cold.

If you pull away slowly and are slight with the throttle its fine, but if you give it a few more revs it will hesitate.

After literally about 3 minutes the problem is gone.

Plan B, time to replace the post cat lambda probe.

Exact problem im having with my A3! I've ordered a new coolant sensor, and also a air temp sensor (the one in the TB). Going to change the thermostat too as it never gets to temp.

Does anyone have any picturers of what the Air-Temp sensor looks like, and is it easy to replace ??
Would it be thye same as one fitted to a 98 Passat 1.8T, my A3 is a 2000 face-lift model ??

probably!

On the TB, there are 2 plugs, One with about 6 wires, and one with 2. Its the one with 2. The sensor is held in place by a hex bolt.

Temp sensor is super easy to swap. Like rich says, its on the throttle body. You don't have to remove any engine covers and its right in front of you. One allen bolt and one connector.

More info from the girlie today about the golf. It also misbehaves if the car has been idling for a while in traffic which is confirmed via a rich mixture error code.

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

Rich, I've just been on ECS's website and they offer replacement lambda probes for VERY good prices compared to VW/Audi.

See here

The site mentions these are for AWW & AWP engine codes which as far as I know are the US versions of the AUM and AUQ. My golf is AUM.

Can you get these probes from them and if so, can you post a price?

Ta.

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

Both front and rear probes from VW are 105 each. Knowing my luck I'd probably need both!

GSF say they can get them for about 60 but can't garentee oem fitment. I don't want any universal type probes.

ECS have them for 25 for the front and 13 for the rear at todays exchange rate which seems to be very cheap!

I'd consider ordering them direct as even with shipping its going to work out cheaper. Obviously easier to get them from you tho.

I've put a post on VWVortex to try and confirm the part numbers are similar (unless anyone here has the US version of ETKA?)

Well, from ECS, for both front and rear including taxes .etc (inc vat) works out at 78. MUCH cheaper than audi, despite them being sent 4000miles!!

This is the thing that gets me, some of this stuff that ECS supply has clearly come form germany, bit it Bosch or Audi themselves but its cheaper for us to get it from the states than from within the EU - total pisstake in my opinion! I know next time I'm on holiday over there I'll be doing some shopping!

Right. Been talking to a few guys and it seems there are only two types of probe available in the US. A wide band 6 wire item and a 4 wire narrow band type.

I've had a look a some service info and wiring diagrams and as far as I can tell the ECS items will fit my car.

Rich, Do you need me to call or PM you about an order? I can wait for your next shipment as its not super urgent.

Re: A3 1.8T - Cold running problems

There isn't really much to it. Remove all pipes and cable if fitted. Then remove throttle body via the four mounting bolts.

Spray carb cleaner into the body and wipe out the gunk.

Replacing is reverse of removal etc.

Don't try to take apart the electric stepper motor.
