Well I think my time with a A3 might be short lived! Iv'e had a little bit of a bad Idle problem for a few weeks but put it down to a torn PCV System, old Plug's etc. I've been building a pile of part's to put on but hadn't got around to changing anything over yet but now they might not even get a chance of going on lol!

So, the Car was working fine apart from the rough Idle with rev's bouncing. Just lately it had got abit worse with the Car sometimes cutting out when coming to a hardish stop or going into reverse. Then all of a sudden the Car has now died. I nipped out the other day & parked up as normal when I got home. A few hours later when I went to start the Car it fired up straight away, I let it sit & Idle for a minute as usual & noticed that the bouncing seemed quite bad. I went to drive the Car &....... nothing!! Foot to the Floor with no Rev's/ acceleration! After various starts all I've found out is that the Car has a life of it's own! It will always start but sometimes will run really bad, sometimes not 'too' bad, will let me rev now & again but mostly now there is no accelaration at all.

I've pulled codes again & again but they will randomly change!?! I will mostly get:

PO012
PO223
PO638

Also I get the EPC & Engine Management light on, I clear them but they soon come back!

From hours of reading I've found out it could maybe be the Throttle Pedal, Throttle Body, Coil Pack's, Crank Sensor, Cam Sensor or a dreaded short in a O2 Sensor causing the ECU to blow something!!!

Can anyone who knows these Engines in detail advise where to start as I haven't really got money to do the 'change each part for new until it's fixed' option & then end up having to buy another ECU!!!!!!

16396/P0012/000018 - Ross-Tech Wiki
16396/P0012/000018 - Bank 1: Camshaft A (Intake): Advance Setpoint not Reached (Over-Retarded)
Possible Symptoms

Erratic Idle

Possible Causes

Intake Camshaft Adjuster tight/stuck
Intake Camshaft Adjuster faulty

Possible Solutions

Check Intake Camshaft Adjuster
When the Intake Camshaft Adjuster uses oil pressure to control the adjuster, check the oil pressure. The 1.8T is notorious for issues but any engine with low oil pressure or restrictions in the system could result in various timing DTC's such as 17748/P1340/004928.
Use Output Test, Meas. Value Blocks (MVB) & Basic Setting

Do you get a rattle on start up at all? this is related to the cam chain tensioner typically

Not sure on the others... can you scan with VCDS?

EDIT: the other two appear related to the throttle pedal... a scan with VCDS would be helpful I think as it will provide more detail...

<tuffty/>

What he said ^^^

A VCDS scan would be useful, it offers far more detail than P(ants) codes; and you can log stuff too.

(I was just writing to suggest that some more specificity might not go amiss (details of engine/year etc.) - and a location configured in your profile might increase the likelihood of someone offering you a proper scan...)

Cheers mate, yeah I've looked up the codes & possible fixes etc. I'm quite handy with Car's etc but I think this Cam stuff will be above me if it is down to that! I was thinking that the Cam bit's might be to do with the Engine being all over the place due to either the Pedal/ TB not sending the right signal or at worst, the ECU being f**ked & sending/ receiving signals to various things at the wrong times etc! On my Torque App it's showing that I have -4s etc on my Timing! I've just bought S3 Bumper's, Wheel's, Hose's & all sorts of bit's as well :(

Did you see my last Post to you in my other Thread Tuffty? (Incase it does ever work again!!)

Just replied to your other thread (assuming its the injector seals one)...

Do a proper scan so we can see what VAG definitions come through... VAG have extended the fault codes from the base OBDII standard to allow for more flexible/precise fault diagnosis which is why you will hear everyone bang on about a VCDS scan rather than P codes from a generic device.. I have torque app too btw... very useful and love the dials but something like this needs VCDS really..

VVT tensioner swap if this is the issue is a piece of cake mate... I posted on a thread this morning with links (http://www.audi-sport.net/vb/a3-s3-forum-8l-chassis/207807-aum-apy-heads-mix-match.html) and also have loads of pics in my build thread on doing this too

<tuffty/>

As per pm, I could pop over tomorrow afternoon if you find nobody closer.
VCDS will let me check the function and measured values of the sensors playing up. Should be able to get something conclusive from it.
ECU's are easy to change if the worst happens, but being erratic id suspect a dodgy sender or wire.

As said before a vcds scan would be very helpful, but this sounds a lot like when josh had a short in his throttle body wiring, so may be worth your while checking and/or doing a throttle reset with vcds

Hope you get it fixed fella!

Nice one for all your input guy's! @udi A3 is going to come over shortly & see what we can figure out :) I have new Plug's going in, just bought TFSI Coilpacks & Adaptors (the OE 1s like yours Tuffty) I've also ripped out the SAI, N249 etc & all the crap that goes with it. I know it could of been left until after but the Cars just sat on the drive, I already had the bit's needed ready, it eliminates some things out of the equation & I've replaced some Vac Hoses with Silicone in the process so that's obs a good thing!

Anyone know where to get a Coilpack Harness from? I asked Audi Main Dealer & although they have it listed he couldn't order it!?!

Nice1 S3 Dave , cheers mate :)

Now this might sound a little stupid but will I need the 1 with or without the Oil Level Sensor? Also it states "Unfortunately this loom is not suitable for the 210bhp / 225bhp / 240bhp 1.8 20v Turbo engines", is this because they do have a Oil Level Sensor or is their another reason these don't fit those engine's?

O don't worry mate, you might still be getting THE call lololol. There's a guy on here called Dave who lives about 10 min away from me. I'd messaged him just before you just for the chance as he hadn't been on in over a year (which is why I then messaged you). He got in touch the day after you & said although he's not fully a 'Car tech' guy as he mainly does IT, he does have the Software etc, has done bit's on his Car with it & also helped members from here before & could nip round if needed to do a quick Scan. So he popped around today & even though the Car is not running at the min as I have some bit's off, he did a Scan, cleared thing's, scanned again, made some Log's etc.

I'm hoping it is just my Throttle Body as it wouldn't even do the adaption!! He said he wouldn't know too much from the Log's as he's not a Vag/ Car guy, which is why I'm trying to get them up here lol. It seems that I have some kind of problem with my Alarm as well as it kept throwing up all sorts to do with it......... now I know why I've gone out in the morning to find my Windows down, hazard Lights flashing etc but no damage to the Car & no Alarm sound lolololololol

I did have the Battery properly tested with a machine that gives you a Print Out Receipt & it did come up as a little low on Volt's. I think it came out at around 12.5/ 13 instead of the 14.5ish but do you think that would be low enough to cause anything!?!

That was the Scan before Codes were cleared.

The next is after being cleared, remember though, the Car has still not been ran:

It seems that most of the Codes have gone but there's now a different 1 to do with the Alarm!?!

If anyone can help with the Codes that did come up it would be a help but I suppose I need to run the Car again & get another Scan/ Log after that to see if anything returns!

Underneath is a Log of when he tried to do a Throttle Adaption. The Laptop said go, the Throttle Body made some right weird sounds but didn't sound like it was actually moving anything inside & then the Laptop reports a 'Fail'

I think my eyes are bleeding after attempting to read that formatted the way it is... lol

<tuffty/>

Sorry mate, I tried to do it on my phone but it wouldn't work right so I had to do it on the Laptop with 'copy' & 'paste' & that's how it came out lol

can you not 'see' anything in there that stands out as f**ked?

Most of my 'skills' if that's what you could call them lol have gone right down hill!!!! I went to type on the Laptop & what with shorthand text messaging + having predictive text etc on the Phone it's messed me right up hahahahahaha

Yea they are readable now - just popped on to see if you needed a hand getting them there :)

Try this

it can then be renamed to .csv to be read easier
