heated mirrors

someone will know the answer to this ...........

what controls them?

is it .........
1 outside temperature
2 temperature/setting on the climate control
3 something else
also does it clear 'condensation'

the reason i ask is after being parked all day at work yesterday
the windscreen and rear screen were iced up and the wing mirror had the 'condensation'
this didnt clear very quickly

i think it is outside temperature, as when i replace the glass last year there was a.....
for now call it an electronic part some kind of temp sensitive resistor

quick test could be to remove the mirror and put a meter across the 2 black wires

any ideas?

I'm pretty sure they are operated by the outside temps going below 5 degrees C, they will also come on if you flick the rear demister on, the mirror adjuster knob has to be in the central position aswell.
At least that's how it id on my 1999 S3.

Re: heated mirrors

To the best of my knowledge and after buying a new one from an Audi spares dept and having a chat with the guy - nothing controls them (on pre-facelift cars anyway) there is a temp sensor on the back that controls how hot they get, but other than that I belive they are on all the time. I think this is correct too as I've seen rain get dried off pretty quick on my car.

The weather hasn't got above 5 for ages for me but I'll check next time it does! I have never turned on the demister or played with the adjuster to get them to work, but my car does seem to be different to others sometimes which is typical

Re: heated mirrors

The pre-facelift mirrors were on all the time and hence burnt out premiturely. Later models had a thermistor that meant they only came on at temps of less than 5 degrees. As far as I'm aware they have never been connected to the demister switch, but I could be wrong.

Re: heated mirrors

note to self.......

before removing mirror glass to test

check the f##king fuse!!!!!

removed mirror put meter across terminals, circuit was made
tested across wires no reading

to see if there was a fuse listed
there it was fuse 1 10A

25p fuse replaced..... wonder how much the dealer would have charged for that

just got to wait for another cold spell now
wasnt going to take glass off again

Re: heated mirrors

just to add to this one - i have just hired a vw touran and the heated mirrors only work with the mirror adjust knob in the middle position. might be the same as A3 / S3 - on the touran the middle position of the knob also had a symbol showing the mirrors being heated.
