    Fault code 00290 ABS Light on

    Bought myself a cheap diagnostic tool off ebay when my abs light came on last week while driving on the motorway. Plugging it in, it shows fault code 290

    Which in the provided booklet says that this is the wheel speed sensor on the right rear, believe to be offside rear

    The sensor looked pretty grubby and was a pain to get out but this is now changed for a new one, used the diagnostic tool again, cleared the fault but as soon as it says clear, the abs light goes out and then straight back on again

    I haven't driven the car forwards yet, but it was also beeping at me when you drive away and shows permanently the brake warning in the central display on the dash.

    What else can I check/do?

    Have you checked the sensor ring in case its bent/damaged?

    So is the book wrong or is the website? Two completely different sides.....

    Your book is wrong, Autodata also says NSR (left rear).

    When you remove the NSR sensor, check to see if there is any damage to the sensor pick up area. Doesn't take a lot for the pick up ring to get damaged/corroded and take a chunk out of the sensor.

    The fact that the fault pings straight back would suggest sensor or wiring rather than anything mechanical with the pick up ring or air gap, mechanical faults like that on the old A3 abs system will only reapear when the car has been driven after codes cleared. Also if Ross Tek Wiki and AutoData both agree on the same side them trust them together over anything short of a dealer Vas tool.
