soda blasting - anyone tried it?

as above, i have a used 02M gearbox to refurb, first step is to clean the outside.i have ben looking at you tube and it seems pretty easy to make a very basic blasting nozzle and using soda as the blast media looks to be quite usefuli have a decent sized compressor, should be ok for a small blow gun based kit just wondering if anyone had experiance of using soda on greasy/oliy engine partsthanks

I once put a mento in a soda stream bottle then put it in the machine.

    It blew up.
    Lavis89 and @udi A3 like this.
I quite often say I'm going to do things.

    Then never do them.

Just get some of this http://www.autoexpress.co.uk/accesso...ma-hyper-clean

Have used it to clean off a gearbox I was swapping into my Passat. Brush in leave for a minute and rinse off. Repeat with really thick stuff.

Me and my dad made a small enclosure for media blasting. Worked pretty well, did require a good sized diesel compressor though which when running full throttle (to keep up with air demand) makes a **** load of noise. So I hope your neighbours are friendly.

Was able to do small things easy enough (Brake disc backing plates/axle brackets/fuel tanks straps etc) and while it could take a wheel it proved a pain in the ass to get round it so they were sent away to be blasted.

There are some pics in my build thread if you want to get an idea.
