My turbo fin's move only a little in and out with NO play up and down is this play in the turbo acceptable or is it knackered.

I understand that a little side to side movement is fine. Slack is taken up when the oil flows past the bearings.

It all depends what kind of bearings are in the turbo. Most have sleeve bearings which use the hydrodynamic properties of oil to produce a bearing surface. These will have a certain amount of play side to side but the turbine or compressor shoudn't be able to touch the housing any where. There should be very little axial movement ( in and out) on the shaft. Some turbo's use bearings with ceramic ball or roller elements, these should have no appreciable movement in either direction.Karl.
