It all depends what kind of bearings are in the turbo. Most have sleeve bearings which use the hydrodynamic properties of oil to produce a bearing surface.These will have a certain amount of play side to side but the turbine or compressor shoudn't be able to touch the housing any where. There should be very little axial movement ( in and out) on the shaft.Some turbo's use bearings with ceramic ball or roller elements, these should have no appreciable movement in either direction.Karl.
