Badger 5 tip with oem airbox & filter?

Hi, another light tuning Q lol

I' m thinking of changing my standard TIP to the recommended Badger 5 one but will not be getting a cone filter with it, in fact Im planning on sticking with the original paper element & just changing it yearly.
I do plan on a better exhaust (downpipes etc) & a stage 1 map but before that what difference would I notice with just adding a Badger 5 TIP to my standard air box?

More flow and spool is what notice. Suck it up and put on a cone filter for more smiles though..
 
v3 will be better fit for your oe airbox btw
you will see gains, just not as high as the full kit which runs large open cone
 
Stick a Honda s2000 cone filter on. >£20 and makes a great noise/improvement.
 
I've got the Badger 5 V3 TIP on my stage 1 S3, but with the standard airbox and filter.

I think I posted some before and after logs previously, but from memory I gained about 12 bhp with just the TiP.

I tried the S2000 filter mod, but didn't like the noise.
 
Hi guys, thanks for those opinions, I think I will go for the badger v3 TIP once of decided on an exhaust. I will be sticking with original airbox & filter though as there have been so many negative & misleading comments about open cone filters & even replacement panel filters that I don't think the gains are up to much unless you have a seriously modded car.
 
To be honest mate I think you would be wrong to keep the standard air box and filter. Gains with cone filters are proven and I would 100% recommend you to go for the full B5 induction kit that Bill supplies.

Hi, I do take your advice on the gains, just there has been so much talk about heat shields needed or not, heat soak & air not really getting to the cone once moving with bonnet closed etc, then the cleaning & re oiling issue (upsetting maf etc) & then the overwhelming fact that much more powerful cars than ours come as new with air box & paper filter & manage to pull in enough air, are these lifetime filters really able to be cleaned to as new or will they get more restrictive over time. Oh & finally I just don't really like the look of the cone under my bonnet (even a blue one to match my car lol), just looks a bit to boyish I feel & reminds me of the old mk 1 escort days (not that they weren't good times) with my pipercross sponge on top of my webbers lol.
 
the people youve read ranting about heat shields and cooler air and getting colder air to the filter are very misleading to people like yourself.
They just need educating. Theyve prob come from car scenes like the saxo or clio forums (everyone starts somewhere) where on N/A cars the concept of your intake being in the coldest place possible and getting cold air DOES apply.

People try and carry this on to forced induction cars, this is where you see people chatting ****e about heat shields and how it 'deffo gave 5hp from cold air). The turbo on a car is a heat pump, regardless of intake temps at filter it will always be X amount after the turbo, which is why they have intercoolers/chargecoolers.

As for more powerful cars with airboxes, of course theyre adequate for whatever power they have, lots of r&d has gone into it. But they have to keep noise, servicability and aesthetics to a high standard.

As for air not getting to the cone, they dont create vaccumes under the bonnet, we have ambient air pressure doing the job of feeding it alll it could ever need.

As for life, they do last longer, they are cleanable and provided you keep on top of it they can stay quite clean actually. Oil damaging mafs is merely the fault of owners putting too much on after cleaning. Some dont even require it.

Anyway, nothing wrong with an airbox with uprated panel, you will still be happy and it is a nice option.

Thanks for that info & yes as you say all the heatshielding thing just had me wondering but also there is Badger 5 who is obviously a tuning expert & he sells the whole package with the heatshield so hasen't he done the tests with or without?
