Down on power?

Hi

When my S3 was having a new clutch recently, the guy at the garage reckoned my car felt slightly underpowered. They offered to put it on the dyno and take it from there but I declined.

I haven't done anything about this as until then I hadn't noticed anything wrong. Of course, I've now been over-critical and having tested the car for a couple of weeks I wonder if they have a point.

It's still fast. Turbo can be heard and no warning lights. But I don't think it pushes me back in the seat like it did.

Are there any common faults that could account for a slight loss of power? I am considering taking the car for investigation but wanted opinions here first.

Thanks.

If it's nothing too obvious, I say that is probably you who got used to its power or them trying to charge you a dyno run

Of course you can always have the car checked.

Just to be on the safe side...

I would get it plugged into vagcom. Perhaps the MAF is failing?

Have you changed the petrol that you normally use?

Just some thoughts...

Re: Down on power?

A little note on warning lights on the dash in these cars... I've needed a new engine and turbo without any lights coming on, and I now believe a coil pack failed on saturday without any warning lights. Basically what I'm saying is - if you think even remotely there is something wrong with your car I'd get it checked with Vag-com at the very least.

Monkey,

How is the new clutch though? Has the hesitation gone? Perhaps let us know in the other thread?

If's its down on power, log block 002 in VAG-COM to get the Air Flow in "g/s". Do 3rd gear or 4th gear pulls from 2000rpm to the red-line. See what the air-flow comes out as. Also log requested and actual boost (forgot which block it is). But that should give you an indication of whether the car is producing the power.

As for the rolling road. It's proably worth doing, just for peice of mind. But do the VAG-COM stuff first. Yeah, the guy may have been trying to sell you a RR session. So if you don't trust him, just go else where.

Let us know how you get on.

Re: Down on power?

Was it a main dealer or a specialist?

One question to ask is how well do they know the S3 in order to make that claim?

As a first thing you might want to check VAG-Com for fault codes, log airflow as Al said and actual and requested boost.
Also may be worth resetting your adaption settings and treating it to a tank of Optimax

Good point, but he's got a chipped S3 himself!

Re: Down on power?

As he not got VAG-COM then?

IIRC, a chipped S3/TT should make 208+ g/s MAF reading. According to the theory.

When I bought VAG-COM myself, I thought I'd hardly ever use it, and it costs a tidy sum really. But its one of the best things I have ever bought. If you want to keep a check on your cars performance, investigate things yourself before going to dealer/specialist, its a must.

Re: Down on power?

50% of the time I think the power is full, 50% not quite. The S3 has always been a bit like this anyway due to air temperature etc so I may be imagining this!

Sure this independent has VAGCOM, I'll think about booking it in but it's certainly not urgent.

Thanks for the replies.
