Hello,
I got an A3 Sport 96 and I notice that when I turn the steering wheel hard right or left I hear a bang or a ping coming from the front in the bonnet.
When driving straight the car behaves normally however when you go over uneven roads I can hear a rattling sound in the right side near the steering column or in the bonnet.
Does anyone know what could this be? If so, what will it cost to put right?

Thanks in advance, BigH

also power steering pump makes a lot of noise if its fluid is low

PS pump tends to whine when on its way out or low on fluid, so dont think that will be it.
Simple test with the car stationary, go full lock left and right. Whine/XS noise probally fluid or pump....

.. otherwise could it be your steering rack?

Thanks fellas for your input so far. I have taken the car to Audi today and they did a test drive.
They reckon it could be a broken spring but they need to do a diagnostic check and take the right side front wheel off to do further inspections. I am now awaiting their results.

Keep you posted, Big H

Exactly the same happened to my S3 yeasterday.
Spring broke on front offside.

£176 to fix.
