S33nyboy's 1.8t build , the most difficult ever? Swedish style!

    I've been off here for a while because I've bought a German tanks (e46 m3 :-D)
    [URL=http://s1282.photobucket.com/user/S33nyboy12/media/42ACFA69-1082-4DBA-943A-457433692FFF-1394-000000B188A2D20A_zps931dc58f.jpg.html][

But now I'm back as me and my dad have a new project which we plan to engine transplant with a vag 1.8t engine lump. It's a Volvo p1800 1971 coupe RWD.
I've got lots to do first like media blast the whole thing and all its parts. Then respray it etc in white ( my dads choice) . We are swaying towards a vag 1.8t lump because there are plenty of smashed up ones for sale or breaking, cheap parts and wealth of knowledge available to me on here and locally RTECH. We are NOT going for massive power probably around 200bhp but need reliability as plan to show the car once finished . It's going to be a long project not rushed as we are both very very busy with work. Enough talk here's pics

All opinions welcome, any help or hints are too. Ill have loads of questions when we get to the engine bit but for now I'm thinking of buying a complete donor car and working from there. Like a 97/98 a3 1.8t from scrapyard..........

    Cheers, Sean

I'm a bit worried at the minute of the amount of work involved, but when you look at the Volvo it is very basic ...... So I'm thinking most complications will come from the vag 1.8 20v turbo conversion. I want to do a lot of work myself however my dad is thinking more of paying someone to do the conversion like a specialist...... I'm not onboard with that. I want to bench build the engine with new bits like turbo , manifold, inlet , head gaskets etc.

i know mate, I didn't know what it was till my old man showed me online. Didnt know it existed ! It is quite charming in the flesh, I almost like it as much as the e-type jaguar I dream of owning.

Sorry tuffty I should of asked did you guys do it, and was it difficult???? I'm assuming custom propshafts and running gear , what bhp did he aim for? Custom engine mounts? Exhaust? Did he use donor car or just engine?

    cheers,

    Sean

The owner has done most of the fabrication on it mate... he helps Bill form time to time here and is a good friend so I can ask him for more details or to answer directly...

Its a sierra cosworth gearbox and an after market bellhousing... the clutch and flywheel are custom I think and the sump is baffled...

Prop has not been done yet I don't think but will be custom.... everything is custom on this particular build... its going to be 600hp or more as its going to be used for drag racing..

600bhp!!! Wtf. He's going quite considerably more than us then . Got to think reliability in mind . And with big bhp comes the needs for big brakes and suspension upgrades which I don't think is necessary for us.

Thanks for replies tuffty anyway. Ill post progress as I go and when I hit a wall!

    Thanks P.T!

forgive my lack of knowledge but I assume the link is to be able to keep RWD with vag 1.8T engine car.....? Similar to pairing a sierra cossie gearbox to say a vag agu lump?

I love the whole concept of classic car with a modern heart.
I had a picture of a mk1 escort fitted with a honda s2000 vtec engine in it on my bedroom wall for years and years. The whole idea of it was awesome. You still have that classic soul of an old car, with the unique design and old school feel. With the modern refinement, power and reliability.
1.8t is perfect if you dont go too far with power

we would love to do it with an s2000 engine Karl , I once seen a BMW compact with one in and that was evil! But a smashed up s2000 still goes for daft money £3.5k plus. Where as the a3 1.8t really isn't going to be costly to purchase. I've been doing some research last night and today and found things to support me on the build also I don't see it being THAT difficult.

I know it isn't going to be easy, but the plan is to have a donor car not just engine so swap everything possible off the a3 onto the ovlov.
