Boost leak where to put the smoke?

I have a smoke pellet and i would like to know where the best place is to try and introduce it to the vacuum route to check for leaks?

smoke alone won't help... needs to have pressure behind it else it can't 'escape'

if i had the engine running would the vacuum alone not be enough? i could put it in a pressure bottle (ones where you pump it and then pull the trigger) would that work?

ok so my plan... take maf + filter off, put a bag over the tip with a whole in it, pop the end of the compressed bottle into the hole and pump the smoke in? engine off or on? and reving?

    engine OFF.

You will need pressurised air, from an airline/workshop compressor. The engine will swallow a LOT of air, you need to pump a lot in to actually pressurise the inlet. Your not going to manage that with a pump up garden sprayer.

You will also need to disconnect the PCV from the TIP and blank it off as you dont want to be pressurising the crank case.

depends on how much pressure you apply..
my smoke tester uses only 1/2psi for example

i have a pcv delete so nothing from the tip apart from dv.

1/2 psi is quite low would i not get that from a pump bottle? #arm work out

What if you have a boost leak that only appears at 7psi?

I always test to the same pressure the car runs at. I've seen leaks appear at 15psi that dont appear at 5 for instance.

    LOL

only once in the 100's of cars I have tested has it failed to expose a leak at its low pressure.
    99.9% hit rate for me.

Its very searching, and where there's a leak it leaks at low pressure not just high pressure usually.. The exception where it did'nt spot a leak was on a friends nissan truck, with top mounted intercooler... and you could see the crimped end tanks were black and oily leaving residue, but the smoke test did'nt expose it.. That one clearly needed some more pressure on the system to expose it. It was removed, and immersed in a tank of water and pressurised and that confirmed it.

I luv my smoke tester. one of the best bits of equipment I have purchased. Cuts thru the crap and exposes all the usual vag leaks quickly and efficiently. I remain surprised so few garages let alone main dealers have this kit. Local other cars dealers pop in to use mine..
