    Fully enclosed cone filter

    Hi

Been searching around and many people have fitted cone filters and some are enclosed in modified airboxes with sections removed - typically to keep it looking standard(ish).

I would like to put a cone filter inside a standard airbox with 4 inch pipe feeding it, as at present but no other holes in the box.

    Anyone done this?

The reason is to avoid any increase in induction noise - I really didn't like the noise after my wak box mod and want to remain at standard noise levels with increased flow

Tuffty did it once with a jetex filter

Chop chop chop until it fits. The reality is, you will never get a cone filter of adequate size fully enclosed in the stock airbox. There will always be gaps and holes, with just the airbox trim (not lid) covering it.

Without cuatom making and fitting a larger airbox you will have to fit a small cone in, and in reality you will never see the benefits of a fully open large filter, but obv that isnt high on your priorities.

If you want enclosed filtration then just use a panel filter rather than a cone... as Karl said you would need a bigger airbox to fully enclose a decent cone filter... aftermarket enclosed units like the CDA unit are just rubbish and are actually restrictive... I used to run a green cotton panel filter with the 4" cold air feed mod at 340hp which is possibly a little outside its comfort zone but a panel filter and opening up the airbox intake horn to accommodate 3" or 4" CAI is good for stg1/stg2 power

I've also enclosed the Jetex filter in the OE box bottom part and covered it with the box cover, you can kind of see it here:

However, be warned, if you're trying to reduce intake noise by doing this then I wouldn't bother....its makes only a very marginal difference.

Thanks for all that - really useful!!

Sounds like I can't have what I want, which is a Badger 5 TIP with a less restrictive air filter such as a cone filter, but without loads of induction noise which i find unpleasant. The car is running at 265bhp based upon MAF readings and I thought 275bhp sounded a much nicer number

Anyone have a cone filter on an S3 near Leicester?

I would like to hear the noise it makes before spending

you can have a B5 TIP on std airbox......... you wont realise as much gains, but it would be quieter

    Thanks Bill

What kinds of differences are we talking on a stage 1 S3? +bhp for TIP alone with standard airbox and +bhp for TIP and Cone? Typical average figure?

Its too subjective to answer, car, age, mileage, life its had, wear etc etc.
B5 tips and cone have given 20hp, and the cone over airbox has given 5hp.

Why so against this 'induction' noise?
Its not going to sound anything like a N/A car you know. All it is is a slight growl and sucky sucky noise.

personally i would take any induction noise over the standard 1.8t noise. in standard form they sound like there gonna blow to pieces everytime you rev them over 4.5k. and a badger tip and filter is def the best way to go. as superkarl mentioned, gains of up to 20bhp, much better flow rate and simply smoother running for a simple bolt on mod is a no brainer. personal choice obviously.

    I had a 1.8t 225 before multiple air systems
    - neuspeed open cone filter, I personally didn't like the noise on full load as it was too artifical noise which you noticed it was coming from the left side
    - standard air box was boring
    - Wak box found throttle to be sticky compared to neuspeed
    - my favourite was the bmc CDA as made a nice induction noise, good throttle response
Power from it who knows but I felt it was less restrictive on throttle to standard an wax box without the noise being artifical and intrusive

BMC CDA is a pile of actual poo... restrictive as hell... had an S3 on the dyno and swapped over to a Jetex cone filter gaining 15gs of airflow...

    noise over function?

    really?

is that what you are choosing an induction based upon?

Yes. Mine is a road car used every day. I do not want an intrusive dull, flat, induction noise every time I drive it. the Milltek sounds sweet, but isn't really noticeable until above 3500rpm (I chose a resonated system for this reason after a test drive with the Milltek MD).
The wak box mod was noisey at all revs and very intrusive.

If it were a race car, then the choice would be based entirely on performance - it isn't a race car though.

15gs of airflow means what and is it at peak revs etc?

I'm not anti against open cone as I had one in a high revving vvtli celica

But with a 1.8t where its located the noise sounds too fabricated, boomy from the left side of the cabin. Just my opinion of course and personal preference

15gs is approx 18hp.. in real terms its subjective gains wise and I can't remember what the dyno figures were off the top of my head but the BMC CDA uses a piddly small cone filter and just restrictive... the 15gs gain was at peak revs but it gained across the rev range too...

divide airflow in g/s by 0.8 and you get an approximate bhp figure..

    dyno's dont lie...
We had an S3 in a few years ago.. hybrid K04.. barely made "ok" figures for a stage 2 std k04.. eg approx 15g/s more airflow over a std k04... Everyone was dissapointed... It had CDA on it.. We removed it for open cone JR which we use on our kits, and bam, 15g/s instantly appreared with corresponding power gains everywhere.

We were all surprised how crap the CDA flowed.
open one up and look how small the internal filter is and it becomes more obvious.

B5 TIP and stock airbox will be fine. Sure you might not eeke out every last horsepower, but your not going to notice the difference.
