Long story why I'm asking but please could someone try and answer the above questions. I don't have any other details really other than wondering if there is another oil filter in the system other than the standard one that is changed at a service? And also is there anything that resembles a valve in the oil cooler? Thanks in advance...

There are two filters. The one that gets change and the oil strainer in the sump that is attached to the oil pump. This is a crude item thats simply designed to grab oilf from the lowest point in the sump and to stop large items hitting the pump.
There is a valve in the changeable filter which is designed to keep a certain amount of oil pressure to the top of the head. This is to prevent excessive valve train wear under initial startup. Also reduces cam follower and chain tensioner noise.
Some cheap filters didn't used to have this valve, but I think all manufacturers put them in now (don't quote me on that though).
There is also a pressure relief valve in the filter housing that attaches to the block. This regulates the correct oil system pressure.

Wow, thanks for the respose! Can I just clarify one point, what is the differnce between the filter that gets changed and the filter housing, if there is one?
Also, could you (or anyone) just confirm if there is a valve in the oil cooler?

As you can see the filter housing (or bracket as it seems to be known here) is the part that attaches to the block.
You then have the oil cooler sandwiched between the bracket and filter.
As far as I know there isn't a valve in the cooler itself.
So what problems are you having if any?

Thanks HTC, some good info. It goes back to an earlier post I wrote about a vibration noise I get on cold start up, usually when the air temp is cold. Its a bit of a boring story about a dispute with audi and I will write a quick post for those who want to read it and i'll explain it better in there in the next few days. But basically a valve got replaced by a specialist near to the oil cooler, possibly number 6 in your diagram, and during this dispute i described it as being in the oil cooler, not knowing much about cars! They sarcastically wrote back saying there wasn't one there. Just wanted to clarify this really (couldn't get hold of the specialist), and you have! Cheers.
