s3 ecu software update, idle hunting 760-820 rpm

    Hi,
I am helping a friend who has had the BAM engine fitted to his s3, I read the ecu to see what software it is running and it still had the 210bhp ECU flash.

    HW: 0261206794
    SW: 1037360154
    Engine: 1.8L R4/5VT
    SW upg.: 8N0906018J

I tried a BAM file 8N0906018BH / 0261207751 / 1037362999 and it worked but the tickover was hunting with the new flash.
Has anyone had this problem after an ECU flash update?

    Why not just leave it.

Hunting is usually hdardware related, bad maf, dirty/misaligned throttle body, vac/boost leak.

Hi, apart from running the wrong software for the engine and not using the VVT, an extra 15 hp is there to be used, the extra 400 rpm and 55-60 bhp from a stage1 remap, after that there are lots of mods to do.

Really want the correct ECU software in place to start with.

There is no hunting with the 210 flash but there is with the 225 flash. any ideas

No point really if its getting mapped? I'm not sure on process of mapping, but leaving it where it is like Karl said and trying to see what hardware is causing the hunting will be key.

Have you tried a remap? I mean any other files than the original 210 and 225?

When you say it's had a BAM engine fitted, was the ecu changed along with the engine? Reason I ask is BAM is 225hp stock.

Now I don't know much about ecu files, but was the BAM file you loaded for a S3 / TT ? Although they are the same engines, I have found that the S3 uses a different MAF sensor number to the TT. So maybe the hunting is due to the file/maf being incorrect.
Thats my half a cent input, as I don't know enough to warrant 2cent

Try unplugging the MAF connector and see how it idles.

    8n0906018J is from the AMK

    8n0906018H is from a BAM

was something removed from the old setup. Ie sai, vvt egt that hasn't been accounted for in the new flash?

    Hi All,

In reply to some of the sugestions:

It still has the AMK file in the ecu, when the mechanic changed the engine he just changed the engine.

We want to push this engine so want the right software on the ECU to use the VVT properly.

I have put a fresh Audi BAM file (8N0906018J) on, and 'borrowed' a remapped file (8N0906018J), both hunt.
The original (8N0906018BH) does not hunt.

The MAF sounds like the problem, I had no idea they had different MAF's swapping the MAF for a BAM MAF.
    Thanks Scullies ;o)

    Right,

the J is an amk and the BH is bam
before we go any further can you confirm exactly what ECU you have, which wiring loom and which flash file as you are a little confused on what's actually in there.

    Hi Beachbuggy,

The current ECU settings are listed further up the thread:

    HW: 0261206794
    SW: 1037360154
    Engine: 1.8L R4/5VT
    SW upg.: 8N0906018J

    The wiring loom is:

Custom made/retro fitted for the BAM engine by a pro race auto sparky, not the mechanic who fitted the engine ! ;o)

If the MAF is differrent for the AMK (J) and BAM (BH), I believe that is where the problem lies, as all the the AMK (J) flash files run fine,at a stable 760 RPM and all the BAM (BH) files cause a hunting problem 760rpm-820rpm which are the settings for a selection map of the idle speed based on temperature. The hunting still happens when the car is cold or warmed up which points back to the MAF being wrong for the BAM (BH) flash/engine, unless anyone acn think of another possible cause?

Amk makes use of vvt, so that makes what youre doing even more pointless.
You should use the bam ecu that was for the engine.

Regardless of that, they map and tune to the same figures

AMK/BAM use the same MAF sensor and tube...

Both AMK/BAM use VVT and is identical mapping wise

It makes no difference to the engine realistically what file is in it... you can use (and I have) and LCR file in an AMK ECU for example... what IS important is that you have all the sensors and valves connected the software is expecting to see... anything you 'delete' most be dealt with by coding out and using resistors or valves so the ECU can still see something as the software is designed to run with all this kit connected and if you remove stuff the strategies go out the window and you will be chasing your tail trying to work out why its not running as it should..

For example, no EGT probe (required for AMK/BAM software) will make the ECU run in protection mode for fuelling and will be fuelling very rich...

As its a std ECU then can you read out the fault codes as this may well elude to whats going on...

Also, seeing as this is a custom build it would be worth while explaining EXACTLY whats been wired in and whats been removed plus its worth doing logs to see what everything is doing...

Building a race car is one thing but if you plan to run it on std management you need to make sure you have dealt with the hardware the software expects to see attached else it will never run right

    Are you sure about that?

Means I can't buy a new MAF for my AMK S3 from the USA?

I was going to buy a new oem audi TT quattro 225 maf.

Anyone knows if the US spec maf and the european one are the same? part numbers will help

If the long block BAM was dropped in with all the ancilleries from the AMK, then it would have been fine to leave it as it was. Now you have opened a can of worms becuase who knows what componants are fitted and what values the ecu expects to see. Add this to to the wiring that needent have been altered and a file you "found" your issues could be anything. I'd revert to the working file and map that.

The differences are between narrow band and wide band ECU's... narrow band ecu cars use a maf sensor (on the sensor not the maf tube) ending in 040, wideband sensors end in 049....
They have different characteristics and the map MLHFM have different values....

the same sensors are used in K03 cars too... 040 for narrow band (not AGU) and 049 for wideband (AUM etc)

Dunno if the yank ones are different... I would think they are the same

When I fitted my mates MAF from his TT BAM engine to my S3 AMK, I kept getting a fault. It worked perfect on his TT. I dont know where is TT came from but my S3 was imported from Germany.

Looking at some of the OEM suppliers in the US, it doesn't seem they had the BAM engine.
BEA engine code has the same MAF part number as the S3 AMK / BAM.
