Had a crack at Painting my Bumper!

Rear bumper was looking... disgraceful, it had major scuffs, scratches, stress marks etc etc. I got quoted around £150 by my bodyshop mate to prep and paint it. I thought I'd have a go at doing it myself with rattle cans and if it all went titties up, then I'd get my friend to do it at his body shop.

How the bumper was... actually looked a lot worse in the flesh

Started off with various grades of wet n' dry and a halfrauds rubber sanding block, started off dry sanding with 600 grit, then wet sanded with 800 grit, then 1200, and finally 1500.

Dried it all off and applied 4 layers of base coat. I got this online Auto-Paint which is in St Helens, provided them with my paint code and they mixed it up and I received next day, cost around £12.

I then waited an hour or so and wet sanded again with 1500 grit. Once dried off I applied 4 coats of clear lacquer. Left to dry for a couple of hours, wet sanded that then applied 2 thicker coats of lacquer. Still got to polish but will wait 24 hours.

Finished result:

I reckon I've saved myself a few quid there? Total cost - £25

nice job, alot of people are put off spraying parts them selfs but if the prep is done right and got a good technique no reason it cant come out looking like that. well done

Thanks for the replies Yes very pleased with the results. For anyone doing this - make sure you get two cans of lacquer as you need a lot of the stuff to get a decent shine. Half way through I had to walk into town for a second can!
