amd stage 2 or 3 worth the money, purchase tomorrow maybe? quarter miles?

hey all need a bit of advise here, first of all a bit about the car... bought a silver 1999 apy s3 a few weeks ago with some spare cash 140000 mint blue alcantara and leather interior, steel wheels(horrible!), stage 1 map, panel filter, n249 bypass and forge dump valve... also the engine looks ****ty due to a leaking rocker cover, other than that it idles lovely runs well has had new brakes, rear anti roll bar setup and clutch at audi in 2011 totalling 2000 worth of work, im told it had a turbo around the same time with a ebay screen shot of the page in the history and theres no smoke so im pretty sure it did...
read the codes wiped them ended up with two maf and excessive boost pressure exceeded. sorted the maf but still getting the other after a new n75, maybe air leak or poor map. the map mwas done by a tuner theres nothing online about so im curious about it being ****e and causing my overboost... anyway...

fitted some bbs lm replicas yesterday on spacers and im pretty happy with it, selling my bike tomorrow so i'll be 4800 up... heres my dilema, spoke to amd today and they quoted 1599 for a stage 2 which is a stage 1 amd map sports cats and full miltec cat back estimated bhp of 290bhp was thinking while it was there get them to sort the rocker gasket and clean the oil pickup and sevice aswell as obviously sorting the soft boost problem.... maybe get a full air and water samco kit fitted aswell.

stage 3 was front mount and silicone tip at another 1000... maybe?

if theres any money left maybe get the car vynal wrapped in skyline bayside blue!?

is it worth me paying all this money of should i do it all myself then just get them to map it? im pretty handy but just not sure i can be bothered when i can just give it to them and collect in a week...

what sort of quarter mile should i expect with stage 2 and 3, will it compare to my old stage 1 340bhp sti? this car is a weekend toy, it will be going to santa pod on the 7th july retro show for some runs with my mates legacy b4 manual twin turbo and my mates 10k r5 turbo... loving the way it drives and the interior but wanna compete, my scooby ran 13.6 at 102 with a slipping clutch and my vr6 mk1 14.6 at 94...

should i just buy a sorted stage 3.5k s3 and sell this one for 2k, or do you think better the devil you know?
liking the s3 but i could buy a scooby sti or gtst for some real power.... insurance and fuel brings back bad memorys tho!

help people give me your opinions!?

ok you wont be running 290 ish, we its very unlikely on standard manifold and if you are then its not a safe map.

you need to change a few things such as the TIP for a b5 3 inch tip, XS manifold aswell and a custom remap. AMD's Dyno figures are optomistic.....

weather its worth it or not, only you can answer that as your paying for it! If you mean in reference to power aboutput then it also depends on what your running at the moment. for example, say your running 270bhp, is the expense really worth getting near 300? and if you do go that route, its advised to fit new rods.

then when you fit rods, you'll feel like its being wasted on a k04 turbo... and want something bigger..
then before you know it, you be like tuffty, stacey, andrew spending loads on your car.

Its addictive and har to draw the line!
    Word!!!

My A3/Martys Golf would smash that, and this guys £7000 GT9743 supercharged love machine.

maybe your right... after a fast car... how would it handle nitrous with a progressive controller say 150bhp? its surpossedly running 260bhp atm, boosts to around 1.4bar.... maybe i'll buy another r1 (10.4sec quater!! for 2k!) and leave the s3 at a stage 2 remap and fix and service

For me mate I don't think you know what you want to do....lol Especially now you have got another 4 and a half bags in your sky...... If you want big bhp out of your S3 then be prepared to shot a fair bit of cash at it...But that's my own personal opinion.... Others might differ.... If there is one thing the S3 demands its deep pockets...

i really like the s3, theres other ways i guess... for the strip i could strip it out, reckon theres a fair bit of weight to save right? a cheap bucket seat remove all the interior, drill the feck out of everything inside the doors boot and bonnet... put it back in after?

the amd map is cheaper, what about revo maps?

thinking full exhaust decat, mani, downpipe, all running sweet and stripped proper map?... what sort of quarter should i expect high 13's?

ive heard the internals are good for around 330bhp if healthy?

what turbo would be a good upgrade but fairly cost efffective?

    cheers all!-)

would like to be in the low 13 quarters really! raced a local mk4 golf in my mk1 vr6 and it walked me, was running 350bhp on a lorry turbo!

Engine internals... 330hp... subjective at best especially based on age and not mileage... no such thing as cost effective upgrades lol...

Look at westy's build thread and Prawns build thread for K04 inspired power (there are a few others dotted about, really must bang up a thread linking them all)... not sure what westys 1/4's were but if you plan to abuse it down the strip you WILL need a decent clutch and I would be budgeting for rods too...

K04 Hybrid is the 'cheaper' option but thats only realistically if you are moving on from stage 2 where you already have the 3" DP, FMIC etc... if you are starting from a bog std car then its almost worth going for a big turbo from the outset...

If you expect decent 1/4's on a K04 mind you will need to strip the car... they are around 1500kg dry

I've never heard of a stock s3 engine internals withstanding 330bhp for a period of time, I've heard of people bending rods at 270bhp and 290lbs torque .

i think westy ran 4.8 secs 0-60 , which is quick enough my old man had a jag xkr -s the other day and that was running 4.8 seconds 0-60 and that's fecking fast enough.

    http://i1282.photobucket.com/albums/...ps90c9b41c.jpg

as above if starting from scratch and chasing big power I would go big turbo from the off. I would estimate to get good power with tyres, clutch upgrade and labour with some hardwork from yourself you will soon lose that £4800 into your s3

The ess is not built for quarter mile strip but it is fun doing it as long as your gearbox/clutch/engine doesn't go pop

well the more i think about it i think im getting a bit excited about all this cash... i think a cheaper bike and a full tune up health check, fix and revo map at amd thurrock will surfice on the s3 for now, then i can buy stuff gradually over time if i need more power...
like you say i could poor all this cash in and still be running the risk of it going bang...

I can just see it now - in the S3 both hands on the steering wheel revving and screaming engine as he dumps the clutch fighting the steering wheel with total concentration and then there's the old man and his jag......But I suppose the jag did cost quite a bit more !
02 plate - 2002 - 225bhp - S3 - Ming Blue - completely standard - nuff said, OK there's a centre armrest, sunroof, BOSE speakers & black leather recaros, oh and the non OE chrome pack !

lol I showed my dad this thread , he laughed then said " old I'm only 50! " then ten minutes later he came back and said he would rather push his jag than drive an s3........:-) , I think he's missing the point here you are more likely to be pushing a tuned s3 after its gone bang!

To the OP , consider other tuners for your remap mate, r tech or badger 5 or shark are excellent. I'm not sayin revo aren't but just food for thought.

I ran revo stage 1 then 2 before going for a custom map which made me 305bhp and 348 lbft of torque. Car ran up the strip last year but was on the revo stage 2 and not how it is now (people forget this). It ran a quarter in 13.2 and 0-60 of 4.8 seconds but when dyno'd before the custom map was putting out 262bhp, so those times were astonishing for that power.

I plan to run the strip again this year with the extra 41bhp, WMI (which wasn't working last year), and a stripped interior. Should be interesting to see how much quicker it is.

My engine was rebuilt with large port head, rods, exhaust mani, downpipe, new fuel pump, 550cc injectors, exhaust system, single mass flywheel, and most importantly a brand new K04 turbo.

that is IMO amazing westy! I. Not questioning your figures I'm just adding here a work colleague had a s3 8p running 320bhp with smf and Sachs uprated clutch with mapped launch and only ran 5.0 secs 0-60 on v power and I can vouch he is a wicked driver , all bulltish aside now, why is a 300bhp approx 8l, quicker than a mint tuned 8p....... Running more bhp???

I've changed a lot of hardware on the car and I bet your mates 8P still has the stock exhaust mani and restrictive Cats etc. As Bill says "it's all about the flow". I showed up quite a few cars that day and Stacey and I were racing side by side all day and he has a big turbo setup but we got the exact same times.

Theres more to a sprint then just the power figures and I guess my car proved that last year.

Dont forget there was no reaction times so you could add .5+ ? Still kept up with staceys though with or without timings...

People keep mentioning reaction times but surely 0-60 is still 0-60 whether you go on the green light or wait a few seconds to steady yourself?!

daves prob just refering to the 1/4 times. as some strips do reaction. and some even do a 1 foot roll out. or both. or none

    My 2p

Ive had my second S3 for about 18 months now

I had a revo stage 1 map a performance panel filter and a 007P withing a month of buying it.

I Was quite happy with that till i saw westy`s thread lol and met a few other S3 owners at some local meets (damn peer pressure).

Since then i have slowly made the changes to get my car to Stage 2 hardware and have also had the map changed to revo stage 2 (its only £50) and it is good and pulls well. (I also spent money making it handle better too.)

I am now thinking of getting a proper custom map from B5 or r-tech (hopefully over the summer hols) just to get the most out of the car without pushing the standard internals too hard.

After this my plans would be engine rebuild with rifle drilled rods etc a bigger FMIC core and a K04 hybrid. But this is only a pipe dream as such and depends on future changes etc.

So as to the OP`s best route if you are keen on having a nice car with reasonable power without breaking the bank personally i would do all the hardware upgrades as you can to stage 2 specs, and do them all DIY stylee to save some cash and learn about your car. Then once all done and its working happily take it to one of the above mentioned tuners and go straight for a custom map. As this way you will get some increase in performance as you fit the hardware and then its full potential can be realised with a proper map. Plus you save a bit of cash not shelling out on the generic stage 1 and 2 software.

I have my S3 at Stage 2 (3" TIP, DP, Milltek, Sports Cat, Intercooler, Revo S2), and feel its fast enough to have fun in, always makes me smile and surprises a few other cars.
I thought about going Stage 3 but for the extra cost for more BHP didn't think it was worth it.

Theres more to a sprint then just the power figures and I guess my car proved that last year.
It has to be said though, the newer TFSI 2.0 K04 engines are a different beast to the old 1.8s. They easily make ~280hp at the wheels with bolt-ons with the stock K04, which is bigger than a 1.8 K04, it's like a GT2860.

2283 billet wheel, same as used in the 20v K04 hybrids currently... Prawns turbo has one so in theory a 350 odd hp capable turbo...
