Any ideas how much would you expect to pay for an engine rebuild, rods,shells,rings,bores homed,head skimmed and rebuilt

depends largely on the spec... most builds I have seen tend to hit 2k +

rods and pistons alone will set you back a grand... then there is all the gaskets which can run to 200 ish... rebore is 200 ish, block decking is only needed if in a bad condition as a rule..

Normally a good idea to replace stuff like oil pump, crank seals, oil pump chain an tensioner, new big end and main bearings plus new mains bolts.. I could go on...

Thanks for the info, the problem is living on the Isle of Wight people can charge what they want, and half the time don't do a good job

Theres a guy on vagtalk selling a decent rod kit ( rd rods, rings, various gaskets etc ) for about 550, good value and good products, easy to get your pants pulled down so buy sensibly and get an experienced garage to fit. Doesn't have to cost the earth mate or I wouldn't be doing it lol
