Is my handbrake cable broken?

Went for a drive tonight and went to use the hand brake and it shot up and hit the arm rest. No resistance at all now. Sounds like theres something loose in side of it.

How do I go about to check what the issue is?

Where the rear ashtray is, remove it and see if the cables are tight?

Ok I have had a look. Nothing has snapped which is good. The bracket that pull the two separate cables (looking in behind the ash tray) had worked a little loose and one side had popped out. The weird thing is one side does not pull out as far as the other when you pull the hand brake up which is the reason it popped out. I have tightened up quite a bit and should be fine for the time bing.
