Hi All,
My first post in this forum, so thanks in advance to anyone spending their free time helping me out.
So I just got a late 2001 S3 and am getting to know it. As it's a late 2001, but not quite late enough, it's the 210bhp model (released the month before they changed to 225), even tho I was sold it as a 225 - since discovered from forums that it isn't
I'm not planning on modding it and as far as I know it's standard - I need it to last, as well as being fun, as it's done around 120k miles.
I've had a V6 4motion golf, a 170GT TDI golf and an Alpha 1.4 multi-air 170bhp (Turbo VVT), so am used to this kind of power, (and turbos on the whole), but the S3 often seems a bit underwhelming in terms of poke.
Anyway, I think there could be something up with it. It's most noticeable in 5/6th gear when pulling onto the motorway, and accelerating with your foot to the floor but in a high gear, so it the revs increase slowly.
So what happens is...
Select a higher gear so the engine isn't revving high. Boot it, and as the car slowly begins to accelerate, you hear the turbo spooling up, and the revs increase slowly as you'd expect. Then something really odd happens. It sounds a bit like the clutch is slipping (but it isn't - I think the turbo revs increase suddenly rather than the engine revs) as the power seems to drop, the rev counter stands still (or perhaps even drops) for a moment, and while the engine revs stay around the same, the turbo revs seem to increase.
I was wondering if this is symptomatic of a boost leak that only happens at high pressure, or perhaps the diverter valve issue I've been reading about. I also wondered if there was something odd going on with the rev counter/sensor. The car can feel a bit schizophrenic - sometimes it can feel quick, and others a bit gutless.
As I don't really know what it should feel like (as I've not had the more than a month), but something doesn't feel right.
I hope I've given you enough info here.
Any help very much appreciated.
Thanks
Ed
