    Someone please help....

My 2001 A3 1.9tdi has had a cold start problem for a while now....it takes forever to start when cold. Heater plugs have been replaced. Im certain it is a fuel/air problem as I can see airbubbles running through the clear fuel line from the filter to the injection pump when the car is running. I changed the fuel filter and t-piece to eliminate this...but now the car wont start at all. When I turn the engine over, there is only a small amount of fuel running through the clear line from the filter, and there is mostly air. The car chugs and tries to fire but just wont start. When I replaced the filter I filled it with diesel before connecting it up, and I loosened off the injector fittings to allow air out when cranking. Then tightened them up, but no joy. The car also has no visible fuel leaks.

    Any ideas??

Not sure if this is relevant, but the fuel level is really low at the minute, with only 15miles showing on the trip computer.

Friend had a similar issue with a vw t4 of similar age. He replaced heater plugs and still struggled to start in the cold also thought it was air in fuel lines. Is there full power to heater plugs if any power at all? Turned out to be a relay in his

But surely when I look at the clear fuel line, I shouldn't see more air than fuel?

is it a PD engine? if so its drawing air on the tandam pump, if it isnt then its the glow plug relay, they fail and they control the lift pump in the tank

No it has no lift pump. Is there a method for checking the tandem pump to see if it's drawing in air?

turn ignition on and off a few times, may self prime the pump/ system, give it a few cranks and see if it goes then.

I've checked for a lift pump before and all I found was something resembling a lift pump, but it only had and positive and negative wire coming from the fuel level float attached to it....i'm assuming they go to the fuel gauge, and that it is not a lift pump. I'm not fully clued in with the Audi terminology "pd" etc.
