taking engine out

Currently i dont have an engine crane to take the old one out.

So becuase il be acting as the crane, im undoing the gearbox from the block, and lifting the block out alone.
Just taken 4 of the bolts i can see underneath from the gearbox.

How many are there?
And does anyone see a flaw in my plan?

If i had a crane id be taking it all out as one. This way is a little better on my back.

Im contemplating unbolting the transfer box and NS driveshaft and removing the block and gearbox together.

Id just like some input as ive bit decided yet.

Can you not borrow a crane of someone? who make the job soo much easier. you'd still have your disks in the right place after aswell

How much weight can you lift karl? Haha.
 
Hire a crane, if it's just you doing it, you will be in A&E.

I tried to lift a 2.2 Honda engine from a Prelude with a friend, i'm quite well built and we couldn't lift it at all. Remember, when you do lift the engine the car's height will be increased at the front due to you removing the engine. Which makes your job twice as hard.

Dani, i can deadlift twice my body weight fairly easily

il look into hiring a crane.
Ive a pd130 engine sat here, whilst its heavy, and entirely cast iron, i can move it about. so i figured a 1.8t block would be a piece of ****.


So how many votes for all in one on a crane??
How many for try and seperate block and lift it with my wang?

That's fine but your about 4'11" and weight 8 stone.

Remove the front end of the car.
Put a jack under the engine and box, lift it up off the engine mounts and slowly move the engine out the front of the car while its on the jack.
Or how ever it works for a 1.8T.

I've done it like that on a BMWs and Sierras with out much issue.
Its a lot easier and safe than trying to lift it up and out of the bay, its not like lifting your steroid laced protein shake out of the sink.
 
Remove front end of car, which takes minutes, leave fmic, crash bar and lights etc attached to slam panel so that saves a job at the other end.. After you've undone all the necessary ancillaries, rest the engine and box on a jack as you undo the mounts and then, with the crane you have borrowed, move the engine out the way.

You wont be dead lifting it because of the angle, go to gym now, put the weight in front of you and try lift it. you also have to video this and post it here so we can complete our voting.
The complete block is heavy and you going to pull a fat lifting it :lmfao:

Also if you drop it, the block or your feet might get slightly modified!
I would recommend getting a crane lift or even a chain hoist if you have somewhere to anchor it to. Just remember to leave space so you can push the car out the way.

so my vote goes, crane.

That's cute but your only a baby...

If you are dead cert on doing what your saying take the head off then the sump off then take the box out then the block. Bit by bit if you get me.

No way will you be able to lift the engine out over the top.

Or you could drop the engine and lift the car over it.

Or even better pull the front end off like everyone else would and pull the engine out
 
Have you thought how you going to put it all back in the car?
 
I've lifted the PD160 out of my car more times than I care to count. All the people making a fuss clearly haven;t tried it.

Just so you know though, a 1.8t is mildly heavier than the PD130 you've been lifting

The pds block and head are cast iron. My 1.8t has an alloy head, which is off and wasnt very heavy.

wear wrist straps and a weight belt : ) when you deadlift its even weight on each end and a straight bar, and engine i expect has bad grip points and maybe off centre balance? cant you jack the car up and drop it out underneith?
 
Il get it out, and il photograph it all.

I started on the gearbox seperation anyway, i just wanted to know how easy that would be in the bay.

Meanwhile ive been taking downpipe out, removing turbo lines and undoing various power steering and coolant pipes etc.
Im on ny bill 99% of the time. Could do with turning the car around in the garage really.
 
Ah go for it. Did it on my fiesta. Just take out the front end and use a jack to pull it out. I made a makeshift trolley and popped it on there, then wheeled it out the bay. They don't call you super Karl for no reason!
 
If i could maneuver a 200kg Jag XF engine inside a delivery cage onto the back of a loading ramp on a truck you can remove a block from a 1.8t. Go do work son! Take pics with overalls half way up, topless and covered with oil holding a big wrench for the masses while you`re at it! Make sure you`re really angry. Strength is doubled and pain is reduced.

Scott is right, jack under the middle and front off and it'll pull out with no crane easily.

Also, for the more sideways thinking among us, if you don't fancy balancing the whole lump on a single jack, you could always lift the engine up one side at a time and put it on blocks, then push the car backwards.

Definitely don't need a crane for a 1.8T though, so easy to remove /refit.
 
Karl you are a legend mate! I can't stop laughing at this.

Jokes aside , I reckon with a bit of grunting and groaning you could do it. I've done it with a 1.6 esi civic engine and a Mondeo st24 engine. I was a keeno at the gym at the time :)

Did that with a MK1 escort.
Was unable to remove the front we had to lift the whole front end up and wheel it backwards.
Kind of wished we left the rear axle on.
