this sounds a good setup! and less hard work. could you configure your own compound setup? obviously making sure its dont right.
am prosuming the small turbo turbine must be modified otherwise it would choke the big turbo!

    VWVortex.com - 01 Audi TT225 compound turbo setup

theres a guy on vortex that was doing the compound setup, he spent a lot of cash on the project and looks like he is going single turbo after he was screwed by someone who probably couldn't complete the project.

no way! how disheartening to get so far too! that compound setup looks the best option, move battary into the boot!. so am guessing you put a big waste gate on the small turbo to throw the boost to the big turbo! so what configuration would be best. could I still use my gt2871r A/R .86?

I also have no idea on the required setup, I think it would need a lot of researching. Don't just think 1.8, look across all vehicles. I also don't think this will eliminate the low boost problem like a supercharged&turbo setup would.

looking at the compound setup, I wonder what would happen if you fed the exhaust into the first turbo, then the compressed air gets fed into the hot side of the 2nd turbo. Would this cause the turbine in the 2nd turbo to spool faster as its receiving pressurised airflow? Also the second turbo wouldn't be receiving "pulse" airflow.

Alternatively, just go down a tried and tested route and fit a Garrett or Holset. Lag? Drop it down a gear. These sort of one off "to be different" projects just end up taking ages, costing more and end in disappointment.

Even a 2871 doesnt spool fast enough to make it worth while. What do you get? Full boost by 4k???
Compounding with your 2871 will be no different, and a stroker gtx3071 will spool the same and make tonnes more power.

To make it worthwhile you need something small and punchy that will compensate for the big one. You really need 2 turbos at opposite ends of the lag spectrum.
It cant be too small obv. Compounding will always hinder the bigger turbos performance.
So you need a big turbo that will see your power goals quite easily. And another that WILL fill in the lag area. Your 2871 wouldnt.

We should all be asking what the car will be used for anyway?

The GTX3071 is a great turbo that will get you into the 500 bhp mark

If it was me and i had the cash i would sell the 20v engine and fit a TTRS engine or a R32 and turbo that.

Both will give great torque and get more than enough power that anyone can wish for depending on how deep your pockets are.

Both engine with the right money will give between 400 to 1000+ bhp

Looks like it from the headlight.

I like the idea of compund charging. But the smaller turbo MUST restrict the larger to some extent.

Thats what i was thinking Karl.

I still think its alot of work for the gains but would be impressive on the road/track if it worked properly.

Even the delta s4 wasn't meant to be brilliant at low down revs with the supercharger, suppose that how it killed henri toivonen one of the greatest drivers ever because he was having to drive it flat out everywhere to make it work.

yea I thought the gt2871 would be to small for top and too big for spool!
so the better option woild be a gt2582! and gt3582! its in an 8L a3.
surly the t25 flange would restrict the big turbo?

    yeh or 2860 for small.

T3 flange both for flow and better heat management. 44mm wastegates.

T25 would prob be too small on the smaller turbo. Hindering the gt35

lol heres me speculating on what would work. I know sod all about compound charging. Just trying to think about it logically.

hay it carnt be that hard surly!! i love a challenge!
just thinking ant the gt2871 and gtrs the same but the compressor?
if so I could change the compressor!
also the external wastegate would plumb back in before the big turbo so the extra boost would spool it.
its just making sure the wastegate flows enough and not too little to stall big turbo
am just trying to be logical but I think I need some figures doing!!

I'm in the middle of doing a merc m62 20v golf and their is loads of room, the only merc m62 has a clutch pulley which would make life a little bit easier as at a set rpm or boost level you could turn it off, but due to it's large pulley size (110mm) and VW's 140mm crank pulley you wouldn't see much boost. If your target is 600ish then an r32 can handle that easy, I've helped a mate make one with 640hp will post up the plot tomo, thinking back it made over 400 torque @3kish and that uses the biggest T3/T4 no gt bearing turbo.
Going back you maybe better keeping the std ecu and then use another one to control the bypass valve.

I dint even know you could link the ecu!
do you know the max boost of the m62?
I do think the compound setup should produce good results but
    but its the room!!
I dont ethen know what these 1.8t blocks can take!?

watch the second clip on this thred:

    Compound Turbocharging

as long as u got a good flowing mani the wastegate will throw the rest of the overboost to the big turbo!

M62 eatons at a push can flow air to see 270-290 but with very high air temps, Eaton are also know as 'heatons' lol
Well if you geared the Eaton 2:1 70mm pulley to your OEM 140mm you'll see 6psi just off idle and 8-10 by 2k. The 2nd ecu would just need an rpm signal and boost to switch the valve so that the air would bypass the Eaton once the turbo has come online at which ever rpm/boost point.
Some have seen 550/650 HP from 20v motors some have lasted and some haven't, way I look at it is which is safer 600 by 4 pot =150 a cylinder or 600 by 6 pot=100 each cylinder.
