Hi guys,

Bought an Audi A3 T sport 1.8 mk1 1997, car up started fine etc had a strange noise but i drove it around it seemed fine, went to collect it the next day tried the key and nothing happened, no fuel pump noise.

Managed to tow it home and checked all the fuses, replaced the ignition as the existing one had broken plastic bits inside it.

I have looked at some sites about the starter motor hitting a dead spot i have run a wire direct from the battery to terminal 50 on the starter just loads of sparks and nothing happening.

What my question is that if the ignition switch is not working correctly then is it likely to burn out the starter?

Thank you in advance

A faulty ignition switch wont burn out the starter. If it doesn't crank, can you hear the solenoid on the starter clicking when you turn the key? If you aren't getting power to the fuel pump and the solenoid, it sound like the ignition or something else is preventing it like the fuses or the relays.
